Adjust Your Attitude to Improve Your Life

Have you ever been told you need an attitude adjustment? Usually, this isn't a compliment.

My mother would tell me this when I was talking back or arguing with her as a teenager. She certainly wasn't telling me a positive thing. She was giving me a warning that I was stepping over the line and I better retreat or punishments would begin.

This is not the type of attitude adjustment I am speaking of.

By changing the way you look at a situation, you can adjust the way you think about it, and therefore react to it. This is the type of attitude adjustment I mean.

Take for instance a car accident. This is an unsettling situation which causes immediate feelings of anxiety, worry, and fear of the unknown. Tons of questions come to mind and until these questions are resolved, most people feel very disturbed.

Now, let's adjust our attitude.

Yes. The car accident was awful. However, in most cases, no injuries occur and the only damage is to the car itself. Be thankful that everyone involved is healthy and it was only a little metal and plastic that got damaged.

You have car insurance. You pay a fee monthly or yearly to take care of situations just like this. The people you employ to do this job for you are trained professionals and know step by step how to handle this. Be thankful that you have already taken the steps to begin resolving this situation before it even occurred. Give them a call and let them worry about the rest.

You probably have a car rental option included in your insurance. No need to worry about how you will live without your vehicle for the duration of the repairs. Be thankful you have paid for this service and can utilize it without unnecessary planning or stress.

In this example, instead of feeling worried and anxious about having to call the insurance company, file a claim, find a place to do the repairs, get a rental car, and overall worrying about your vehicle, you can instead be thankful that you have taken action in the past that prepares you to handle this situation now.

Remember, an idle mind causes worrying. Keep the mind active by taking action when a situation arises that may be unpleasant. You may not have complete control of a situation, but the one thing you can control is your REACTION to a given situation and your EMOTIONS surrounding it.

I believe the Serenity Prayer says it best: God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.

I agree with you about looking at the bright side of things. When a person has been in a car accident or is sick, that can be difficult. It is not impossible, though. I like your example about how to deal with a car accident. When I am sick, I think about people who love me and the parts of my body and mind that still function well and thank God for a break from my busy life.

I love your attitude, Sarah! I think of sickness much in the same way. God saw that I was a tired and made me sick to take a break and refresh before moving on. Being sick also reminds us to be thankful for when we are well and not to take healthiness for granted.

I agree completely. Choosing to how you respond rather than react is a big part general happiness.

Very true, Stacydee. We can all control our reaction even if we cannot control the action.

Great article. Being perparded for the unknown is best if you can afford it.

Agreed, Daniel. Sometimes we need to be creative in order to find ways to be prepared if we cannot afford to be by normal means. My articles on extreme couponing, gardening and food storage come to mind. For those who cannot afford to create an emergency food storage due to income restraints, using extreme couponing or growing your own food can lead to a large food storage on a small budget.

Great article AJ and soooo true. The first time an undesirable life situation occurs, we are typically anxious about it but when it happens again, we have the experience behind us and don't get as anxious....it's a been there, done that kinda thing and we can handle it better in future occurrences. Why don't we just act like it's no big deal (if it really isn't in the overall scheme of things)? Like with the car accident.scenario, it happens and you can either freak out or not...the situation is not going to change but your reaction can. It's our choice how we react. Another situation comes to mind...having your purse or wallet stolen. It's a pain in the a** but it's just one of those things that can happen in life and there are steps to take to rectify it...and you can take them with a heavy heart or a light one...it's up to you! I think you gave me an idea for another article. Thanks!

We always have the ability to change our perspective if we cannot change what happened. This is something I try to do myself each and every day, but more importantly I try very hard to teach my children this invaluable lesson. It is so much harder at their ages, but I know persistence and open communication with my children will provide bountiful rewards. I'm looking forward to your next article on this topic, AnnMarie!

AJ at the end of last year my house was once again hit by a flood from our local river, we where miles away and everyone was concerned that I was not concerned. As you say I pay a fee to an insurance company, I phoned told them their house had been in a flood and left it as that. They have been in cleaned up, replaced all damaged doors etc and repainted the house put in new carpets etc. What did I do, look at my photo.

Rob, you had the right attitude with the flood. You pay experts to handle situations just like this should the situation arise, so don't worry. Take action and let them worry about how it will get resolved. In the end, I bet the house looked better with the new paint and carpets. While it was not a pleasant experience, worrying wouldn't have resolve it. Glad you kicked back and let others do their job!
