While bad habits are known to their hard-to-break power, some bad habits were found to help improve your health. The contributors to these studies are Harvard Medical School, University of East Anglia, Keele University’s School of Psychology, Brunel University, and University of British Columbia.
The following are 10 bad habits that can improve your health.
Habit #1: Gossiping. While too much gossiping may give a family parrot wrong training, study shows that there is a positive side when people giggle/chuckle when talking about certain issues (which are usually true) that concerns others. Not only gossiping gives us updates on what is happening around us, it also makes us connect/bond with our friends. While giggling at something interesting/funny, we release our happy hormones. Gossiping is also a good stress-reliever, although negative gossiping may do more harm than good (to others).
Habit #2: Drinking coffee. While drinking too much coffee may give you a typing speed of more than sixty words per minute, some would believe that a morning without coffee is like sleep. But according to study, drinking small amounts of coffee (at most 3 cups a day) can boost your energy; increase you metabolism; and prevent depression.
Habit #3: Fidgeting. While restlessness is the result of nervousness, agitation, or boredom, this habit can make you lose weight. According to study, fidgeting can help burn up to 350 calories a day. One good suggestion when restless, like changing the television channels oftentimes, trying not to use the remote control and doing it manually would add up to more calories burned.
Habit #4: Swearing. According to study, swearing is an instinct of a person to survive/escape stress and uphold harmony among friends, office mates, or loved ones. Swearing is a stress-reliever that can shield us from pain. But same study also emphasized that swearing should only be used as last option because frequent swearing may increase the feeling of guilt which can cause more stress/pain.
Habit #5: Skipping a shower. Although not taking a shower for a long time may prevent you from making new friends, study shows that skipping a shower can improve your health. When one takes a shower, the oils found in his skin (which are keeping the skin elastic) washes away with the water. No wonder a friend of mine would happily skip a shower.
Habit #6: Losing your temper. While the worst-tempered people I have met were those who knew they were wrong, according to study, this bad habit is good for your health, because expressing anger can greatly reduce stress. On the other hand, people who suppress their anger double the risk of having heart problems. But be careful when expressing anger so as not to regret later.
Habit #7: Sunbathing. While too much sunbathing can cause skin cancer, according to new study, spending at most 10 minutes being exposed to direct sunlight without sunblock can actually prevent rickets and heal you from flu or colds. But don’t let sunbathing result to a red skin.
Habit #8: Having a lie-in. Many of us would sleep a lot during weekend (after a long week of hard work). Now, before you start to feel guilty about too much sleep during weekends, here is the good news. According to study, sleeping can give you memory boost, reduced stress, and even long life.
Habit #9: Giving in to your cravings. This is good news to those who are in pursuit of developing healthy eating habits. According to study, giving in to your cravings and eating a little of the food in which you are not encouraged to eat (junk food), can actually help you stay on track in your healthy diet, because this act can actually lessen your craving for that particular food and will keep you motivated to continue with healthy diet.
Habit #10: Daydreaming. While many of us would consider daydreaming as doing nothing useful or being lazy, according to study, daydreaming can help you strengthen your problem-solving ability. So, while you are daydreaming, you are unconsciously dealing with your other problems (having an ample time to figure out what to do next when finally facing these problems).
I agree with all except number 2 coffee is bad for you, (only because Heather says smoking is bad for me) loved this article. So many things said to be bad aren't in moderation. A Dr once told me when my wife told him how much salt I use, "if the body needs it it'll tell you" "as long as the food is not salty to the taste" you are using enough salt, and not too much. Now if I can just convince my wife the chocolate I eat does not taste sweet to use the same analogy.
Really enjoyable article. I agree with Joan about the guilt, since these are also favorite habits for me too...:-)
Guilty of #2 #4 #9 #10 LOL! Very nice article. Def. sharing this one! :)
8 out of 10 isn't all that bad. I enjoyed the read and have to agree with the findings
I have a new found respect for your writing Lemuel! Tell people what they want to hear and they will obviously read all day! I'm going to go back to number 2 and start again.
Listen to all these comments Lemuel. I'm starting to wonder about the crowd you and I are hanging out with here!! lol
I should be in great shape...LOL!!! I think I am guilty of all but number 1 and 3. I find I tend to cuss when I'm stressed...I guess I am inadvertently relieving the stress, and I love to sunbathe - I don't believe anything survives healthfully without fresh air and sunshine. And I just can't start my day right without my java. And I feel guilty when I lie-in. Now I can tell myself it's okay. Thanks for backing me up - I don't feel so bad about my bad habits now... :)
