Do You Really Need That Second Home?

A very clever gentleman named Mark Sisson wrote a super book entitled; "The Primal Blueprint".

Over the hundreds of thousands of years of human existence, we have really changed very little. I'm discounting the Neanderthals. Although these poor old chaps had bigger brains than we have, they died out because when we came on the scene, they simply couldn't keep up with us physically. Besides which, we developed spear-slings and were able to run a lot faster.

The problem is, we've made so many rods for our own backs. We aren't supposed to be fat, shovelling loads of pills down our throats and always tired. Artificial light wasn't supposed to lighten our darkness, nor were we meant to drive cars everywhere nor to be indoors so much.

Cities didn't really spring up until about 5,000 years ago, electric lighting, country and world-wide, has only been going for about 100 years, which television and computers roughly 50 years. The acceleration in technology is quite alarming.

People become quite terrified of Panic Attacks and you can't blame them. They don't know what they are nor from whence they come. But panic attacks were vital to our ancestors. Fight or flight, when the unconscious mind takes over and makes the decision for you. Good grief, if it was left to your conscious mind, that sabre toothed tiger you're facing at the moment would have eaten you for a quick snack.

We'll talk more about panic attacks in future articles, but suffice to say they're a very necessary part of our make-up. If you're suffering one right at this moment, I doubt you'd agree, but believe me, they're vital.

Mr. Sisson believes that we should eat meat, fruits, plants, and healthy fats. You should take naps during the day and sleep deeply at night. You need sunlight, plenty of fresh air, exercise, but without going overboard.

After all, when Ug and Og went hunting, they might be in luck and find they can kill a tasty looking buck just after they leave their cave. They bring it back, the women skin it, and there's their food for a day or two. Then they'd probably have a little nap.

But these days, obesity is a killer. People are becoming fat, not because they're eating more fat, but they're eating a load of grain-based carbohydrates, artificial foods and sugars.

Another problem is the whirlwind lunch. Fred's sitting on his backside all day, his desk piled high with files through which he must wade. No time for a proper lunch. He scoots off to the nearest McDonalds, grabs a double cheeseburger and fries and a Coke, and straight back to the office to continue his labours. This is called multi-tasking. Eating your lunch and working at the same time!

Is this healthy? What will happen if he doesn't make his way through all those files today? Will there be some kind of Cosmic disaster? Probably not. But he'll probably die at 55.

Cell phones, of course, are my pet peeve. The old days of 9 - 5 are over. It's more like 7.00 until ? Yes, you may argue, but look at the increased financial freedom I have? No you don't. Do you really need that second house in Florida?

We lived in a very nice little house for thirteen years, from which I used to work. We visited this chap on a lovely island, a positive paradise, to do some work for him, and he lived in this absolutely beautiful house for a total of one month in the year, 2 weeks in January, and another 2 in June. For the rest of the time, it stood empty. Ug and Og probably shared the same cave!

I do hope this has proved of some interest.

Great article, Mike. Simplicity is the key, although I admit I don't always live that way. One small step at a time, I say.

Very timely article Mike. I'm suffering from this overload right now myself and feel overwhelmed by technology and the pace of living. I'd like to move to some remote place and hide out. Not kidding. I know I have a lot of company. Simplicity is delicious.

I do like the sound of Mr Sisson. What sane advice to get back to the basics of things. Unfortunately there's not many of us who aren't busy digging a big hole for ourselves until life is so hectic that we can't even see over the edge anymore to remember what we really wanted in life! Yes, another interesting article. Thanks Mike.
