Do you ever sit and worry? Worry about all the things that MIGHT happen to you? Worry about what others think of you, or whether you made the right decision?
"Today is the tomorrow we worried about yesterday." ~Author Unknown
Why do we worry? Our brain needs to be active. It needs to always be thinking. So, when you have moments during the day of inactivity, the brain will find something to do. In many cases it will begin a pro and con game of weighting out two options for any decision or cross-road in your life. While this can be beneficial in resolving the conflict, the emotion that comes along with it, worrying, is not. How do you stop this good vs. evil discussion in your head?
"Every Minute We Spend Worrying is 60 Seconds of Happiness We Will Never Get Back." ~Anonymous
When we worry, we are thinking about what MIGHT happen in the future. The thoughts that we associate with worrying are never happy thoughts. Stop living in "the future" and start living in "the now". You are missing out on happiness today by being worried or depressed about tomorrow. Live the day you are in.
Are you worrying because you have a major decision to make? Decide what the worst case scenario is and accept it. By realizing, deep down how bad it could be and becoming okay with it, you release the anxiety that causes you to worrying.
Now that you've accepted the worse case scenario, take action! Take the steps you need to take to make sure this worse case scenario doesn't happen. Taking action greatly decreases your tendency to worry because not only are you taking steps to resolve the issue, but you are also keeping your brain active, which means it doesn't have time to worry. Win, Win!
“Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.” ~Corrie ten Boom
Why do we spend so much of our time feeling bad? Time is precious and should be spent enjoying life as much as possible. Face any trouble you encounter head on rather than avoid it; it will lead to less worrying and more feelings of happiness.
We also need to realize that if we do not have control over a specific situation, it is useless to worry about it. There is no action that you can take to change the outcome, because you do not have control. Accept whatever the outcome is, but do not waste your precious time and happiness worrying about it.
"Let us be of good cheer, remembering that the misfortunes hardest to bear are those which will never happen." ~James Russel Lowell
I have seen so many people get stuck in worry and miss the joy of life. I agree with Sarah, worrying does not add to our lifespan and it does not change the situation. It only wastes our time and energy.
Very true, Robert. As a teenager, I was such a worrier. I wish I knew then what I know now. My favorite quote on worrying: Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength. It's like carrying two days on your shoulders at one! Thanks for your comments, Robert!
The Bible also talks about the futility of worrying. In John 6:25-34, the Bible talks about how God takes care of us. In addition, it says we can't add time to our lives by worrying, and we have no point in worrying about tomorrow. Thanks for sharing some quotes about worrying. My main antidote to worry is to take action.
I think we were taught to worry. That's no excuse, but it is a bad habit. Living in the present has to be practiced. It's also a habit, a good one.Taking action is the best antidote for worrying. And you have to keep reminding yourself that there is a solution to every problem, but you have to address one issue at a time. Many of the things that upset us are short lived anyway. A "this too will pass" philosophy will get us through the rough spots. Thanks AJ.
That's so true, Joe. Now that 2012 is here, everyone is beginning to think about 12/21/12. I cannot help but think of Y2K and the fear that was surrounding the change to the 21st century. And what I realize is that I don't remember much! So, why did we all panic and worry for nothing?
Perfect timing on the advice or maybe I worry more that I ought to. I love the quotations you incorporated. Thank you.
What an article AJ. there is a lot of truth to what you said and the quotes say it all.
Sometimes, we need to take a step back and figure out WHY we are worrying and how can we stop. Otherwise, the act of worrying takes over our thoughts and that is never good. Action is the best thing to counter balance worrying. Daniel, thank you for the compliment - I love these quotes too!
Hehehe... I was tempted to post "are you reading this, Rob?!" lol. AJ this is a great article. So readable and the quotes are timely, profound and interesting.
