How to Put Some Pep In Your Step

Everybody gets down sometimes, to the point, where they just have a hard time finding the energy to get moving again. What do you do when you fall into one of these funks and have a hard time getting back to your old self? Surprisingly, the answers are simple, they just might not be what you were thinking.

The first thing to do is find out what has you so tired. Sometimes it is because you have physically exhausted yourself and can't move another muscle. However, usually if someone is physically tired, but not mentally, they will bounce back after a good nights sleep. If someone is mentally or emotionally drained, well, that's another story. Usually, a traumatic (at least to you) event has crippled you mentally, and you fall into a sort of depression. It may be a small thing, but for all intents and purposes, it really bothers you. Just think about it, when you are down, do you ever have lots of pep and energy? Mental work and mental stress will bring you down more than physical exertion ever did. So, with some deep thought, find what has gotten you down. What is next?

Do something you love to do. People who love their jobs become workaholics and never seem to tire of their jobs. I am a musician and I love music. If I jam with a couple of guys who are good, 5 hours pass and it seems like 5 minutes. Whether you play video games, run, hike, play the guitar, sing, play basketball or whatever, there is something you like to do that will instantly bring your spark back.

Secondly, make yourself get off the couch and exercise. This may be something you love to do (as in step 1). If so, then that is great, because people who love to exercise have a built in anti-depression switch. You just throw on your running gear and hit the road. Sweating heals your mind, body and spirit. After all, the body was made to work, so you are doing it a favor. Walking around the neighborhood works wonders, especially if you walk down a different road than you normally do, sightseeing in a sense. You might even end up in a conversation with somebody new.

Finally, and not lastly, if you are religious, you should pray or meditate. Belief in a higher power has amazing effects on your mind and spirit. Believing that someone is listening to your problems and wants to help you is the greatest comfort of all. If you are not religious, then talking to a friend is great as well. Humans are not meant to be alone, especially if we are in need. Even the most anti-social person needs someone who they can relate to.

Find out the cause of your lack of pep, do something you love, exercise, pray, and talk to a friend. You are guaranteed to feel better.
