Is It Possible To Dream Too Much?

Putting it crudely, dreaming is a bit like an emotional toilet. All the unfinished little bits of adverse business are dreamed out metaphorically and flushed down the escape route of our minds, the circuits having been completed.

Doctor Griffin, the brilliant man who finally cracked the meaning of dreams, was able to gauge the dreams people would have that night by listening to their emotional concerns. The unfulfilled worries they had, like the row with the boss, would make up the dreams they would have that night.

I'm sure we've all been in the position where we're quite unable to remember a name we know we should have without thinking, but for some reason, our memories are blocked. This is an emotional expectation. Relax. Don't struggle to remember. Soon enough your unconscious will throw it up into your memory.

A hypnotist may build a strong expectation through your imagination. Then the post hypnotic suggestion is by its activation. All of us are strongly inclined to fulfill our expectations. This is rather fortunate, because otherwise nothing at all would ever be done.

Let's turn to your question about is it possible to dream too much? The answer is absolutely. It's the basis for depression. I do believe we've touched on this before, but just as a reminder. The average person dreams about 25% a night, while the depressive dreams three times as much, nearer to 75%.

Dreams aren't really supposed to be remembered, but the more nightmarish ones do tend to stick with us. I was in Africa in 1960-62, when the whole country was blowing up. I won't go into any details, but I used to have this recurring dream for years afterwards of seeing tribesmen running around the house at night, assegais in hand, ready to attack.

I used to awake, covered in sweat, and it took me a good minute to quieten down and realize that it was only a dream.

But let's take it one step further. Supposing you are a depressive. A lot of your day will be spent sitting or lying around, ruminating, or brooding about the past. Now usually there's nothing whatever you can do about experiences you had years ago, when you had a row with this man, or in your opinion this woman treated you very unfairly.

From what we mentioned earlier, about flushing the dreams away and completing the circuit, it may be well understood that these thoughts aren't going to go away. The more you sit and ruminate and brood, the worse it'll become.

If you're not a very assertive person, but do tend to worry a lot, the same sort of thing's going to happen. Basically, you'll have a head full of uncompleted circuits. So instead of dreaming as you should, for about 25% every night, that 75% isn't giving you enough time to enjoy the good restful sleep that is so important to your body.

Hence, you wake up feeling like a wet sponge and as though you haven't slept for weeks. That's where the pain of depression starts to creep in, but I mustn't become side tracked. This article's about dreaming.

The problem is that depression has such a close association with dreaming. If you're a problem solver, always remember to think positively. You'll find your dreams are a lot more pleasant -- if you're able to remember them -- but by continuing with that positive trait, you'll certainly enjoy a far better sleep.

I do hope you enjoyed this article.

Thank you so much, Joan, for your very kind comments. Provided the depression goes away quickly after you've woken up, then there's nothing to worry about. Kim, don't forget we're dreaming in metaphors and it depends entirely what's happened to you that day. The dreaming is a way of 'flushing' things out that perhaps weren't fully dealt with. This is all perfectly normal. Every good wish, Mike

I'm glad to know that I am naturally inclined to fulfill my expectations. I'm counting on that. Can't always remember dreams, but sometimes (though infrequently), wake up depressed for no apparent reason. It's as if something happened in my dream, but I can't remember what. Most of the time, I just wake up and dash down stairs for coffee. This is a wonderful article Mike. I enjoyed it.

Yes, interesting; strangely I don't seem to suffer from nightmares and never had. Sure, I have some weird dreams but only in retrospect. At the time, the weirdness seems quite normal. Is there a reason for this? Thanks for the article Mike.
