Martial Arts Training

What do you think about when you hear the words martial arts? I do not have the answer for that question because I cannot speak for you, but for me it is not just about learning how to defend myself. Now do not get me wrong being able to defend yourself when needed is a good thing, but martial arts training is another way that I incorporate frequency into my workout sessions. Martial arts are practiced for a variety of reasons, including self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental and spiritual development.

There are many different types of martial arts and with time can help to improve strength, stamina, flexibility and even movement coordination. Your entire body is being exercised when you are practicing martial arts which make it great for changing your routine as you exercise. Martial arts training promotes mental health benefits such as self-esteem and self-control.

Do not be intimidated by visiting a local martial arts school. From my experience most schools offer a free class or a trial period so that you can see exactly what you're getting into. A lot of people do not like to exercise so why would you want to train with strangers? Just ask yourself how much self-motivation do you have and do you participate in other physical activities that leave you alone. Personally I wish I had more friends that would like to want occasionally workout with me and with a class style setting it is easy to make friends and enjoy being active.

Testing or being evaluated is important when it comes to martial arts practitioners especially if you are serious about progression or want to determine your own level of skill. As a student of a martial art program you will often undergo periodic testing by an instructor to advance to a higher level of recognized achievement, such as a different belt color or title. But it's not all about the belt, if you just like to mix it up a couple times a week by attending a class or two then by all means go for it.

I encourage everyone to consider checking out martial arts as well as taking up that free class or trial period as another way to continue to be physically active. Martial arts may not be for you and if you decide that it is not then at least you will have had that experience. There are going to be times where you get discouraged so remember this saying from Bruce Lee "A goal is not always meant to be reached, it often serves simply as something to aim at" and you will be just fine.
