Salt Lamps - How to Purify Air Naturally

Over the past couple of centuries, rapid technological advancement has completely changed the way we live. Today, electricity and gas provide us with light and warmth for hours on end. Cars and planes make it possible to travel hundreds of miles in a matter of minutes. TVs, computers, cell phones, and the internet can now deliver valuable information in a matter of seconds. But with all this technology at our disposal, our lives - though in many ways simpler - can also start to feel electronically congested and overwhelming. Our minds may feel anxious or confused, and our overall health can in turn deteriorate. This may be due to the effects these technological advancements have on the air we breathe, and how it can negatively affect our bodies. Fortunately, there are natural ways to relieve some of the discomfort. If you've ever wondered how to purify air naturally, a salt lamp may be able to help.

What is a salt lamp?

In many regions around the world, naturally occurring salt mines exist near ancient mountains and water basins, where salt from the ocean has collected and crystallized in massive amounts. Miners extract the salt from these areas for consumers, who often value these types of salt for their unique colors and mineral content. One of the products that frequently emerges from the extraction process is the salt lamp. Salt lamps are exactly what you might guess - lamps made from salt crystal - which are essentially large chunks of salt carved into various shapes, hollowed out so that a candle or bulb may be placed inside.

How does a salt lamp work?

Initially, it may sound strange that people would be interested in lamps made of salt. But it is what occurs when a salt lamp is turned on that is truly a remarkable wonder of nature. As we all know, salt naturally attracts and absorbs water, and of course, the salt of a salt lamp is no different. In this case, it will attract and absorb the moisture from the air. When a salt lamp is exposed to the heat of a candle or bulb, however, this moisture is forced to evaporate at a much higher rate. Thus, a field of negative ions (here, oxygen) is created. This helps to neutralize the positive ions in the air - more commonly known as dust, electrical smog, and pollution - which can no longer function effectively without the density of air moisture. We are consequently left with cleaner and purer air.

The Benefits of Salt Lamps

Along with purified air, there are many benefits salt lamps provide.

1. Affordable, naturally ionized air.

Salt lamps are all natural, and depending on their size, can purify air more quietly and efficiently than other name brand air ionizers at a fraction of a cost. Some of the best ionic air purifiers on the market can cost hundreds, and can even produce elevated levels of ozone, which is detrimental to lung health. With a salt lamp, all you need is a candle or electrical bulb and fixture to enjoy the positive effects of hassle-free, natural indoor air ionization.

2. Greatly reduced airborne bacteria, allergens, and smog.

The air around us, as touched upon earlier, is polluted by the by-products of technology every second. More commonly referred to as "electrosmog", this form of pollution is a result of the exponential growth of electromagnetic radiation generated by cell phones, wireless internet, and many other electronics. During negative ionization, salt lamps help to offset electrosmog, leading to improved focus, decreased anxiety, and more peaceful rest.

In addition, salt lamps effectively reduce the contagion, allergen, and dust content in the air by neutralizing their positive ions. This may lead to diminished health disorders and allergic reactions such as coughing, sneezing, migraine headaches, and other respiratory complications.

3. Unique and natural beauty and color.

Salt lamps are almost always carved from colorful, unconventional and naturally occurring salt crystal, and therefore no two lamps look the same. Himalayan salt lamps, for example, are generally pink and orange in color, whereas Persian salt lamps are marked by a deep purple hue. Enthusiasts are delighted to find that each lamp is truly one of a kind. The gentle, calming glow that salt lamps produce also make them the perfect night lights, and are often used to reduce stress, depression, and anxiety.

Although salt lamps cannot cure our worries, stresses, or diseases, they are still beautiful and functional works of art. They help give us cleaner and ionized indoor air, while at the same time providing us with a pleasant and calming glow. And the best part of all - they do it all naturally.
