Split Personality Disorder

Have you seen a person behaving strangely at times showing behaviours of one or more totally different characters? This is a very serious and also dangerous condition for the person and those associated with him/her. This is a Psychological condition that makes them behave differently. Within a fraction of a second they change their behaviour without themselves knowing about it. A child may behave like a grown up, a male like a female, calm and quiet person turning wild altogether in a split second can all be due to this psychological condition. It is referred to as Split Personality Disorder or Multiple Personality Disorder in Psychology.

The symptoms can vary between persons. But the behaviour always will be very much contrasting. There are several factors for the split personality disorder.

The shock due to the loss of someone dearest to a person can create a big impact in his/her behaviour. Some bad and traumatic experiences in the childhood can also give way to split personality disorder. Children or grown up people who are neglected by their parents or family members as well as public can display such disorder symptoms. A person might have been suppressed by his/her peers for a long time and chances of developing a depression is more in such cases. The depression can lead to various diseases and one of them is the split personality disorder if not treated properly. Children who are deprived of childhood nurturing will show this disorder at some point in their life.

One gets paranoid without any specific reason, keeps away from the company of family and friends, getting recurring bad dreams, sudden change in the mood etc. are some of the symptoms of the split personality disorder. Some having such problems may not even show any specific symptoms that we can easily detect but their actions will be totally unexpected from them. People suffering split personality disorder is diagnosed to show some extra power when they change their characters. You would have seen different movies with characters having multiple personalities.

The treatment generally is psychiatric, to identify the root cause and correcting the personality disorder. A Psychologist or a Psychiatrist will have to interact with the patient and analyze deeply to find out the exact cause and suggest some treatment pattern. It may require several sittings with the patient and their dear and near.

Since the person showing the split personality disorder is not changing his behaviour or actions knowingly, family members as well as friends must be very supportive with them. When such a patient is subjected to Psychotherapy in which the reconciliation of multiple personalities into the original one happens, the patient will show extreme conditions of behavioural changes. At times the patient will not respond to the psychiatrist and at times they will turn extremely wild. So, the treatment must be done only by experienced psychiatrists.

The split personality disorder is known now as Dissociative Identity Disorder. In a dissociated state a person gets separated from reality. There is a host personality and there can be more than one other personality which takes control of the person’s behaviour. Loss of memory happens to the original or the host personality when an alternate personality takes control of an individual’s behaviour. Person suffering from the split personality disorder may show suicide tendency. They may have sleep disorders, do sleep walking, visual or auditory hallucination.

I have heard of a child who had no special interest in singing, change to a perfect and experienced singer of much higher age (and back) where she was diagnosed as having the split personality disorder. Some people add a bit of divinity to this and treat such people like incarnation of god (and goddess). Yet some people connect such behaviour to previous life.

Whatever you call it – the split personality disorder (SPD), the dissociative identity disorder (DID) or multiple personality disorder (MPD), it has to be taken seriously and patients must be given proper treatment and care.
