Epidemic of Overweight

There is now a world epidemic of obesity. The USA leads the world with the majority of its population overweight. Britain is the fattest country in the EU and is in fact catching up with the USA. Even poor countries are facing this problem. Their richer citizens are as prone to obesity as the West and the problem will increase as more and more people aspire to and achieve the Western lifestyle with its lack of exercise and its abundance of fattening food.

Overweight is a serious problem because it predisposes the individual to a vast range of diseases. Some of this diseases for example, hernias and varicose veins, are simply due to the extra volume of fat itself. Some like osteoarthritis are due to the excess wear and tear the extra weight puts on the spine, hips and knees. Others like gall stones, diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke are due to the changes obesity produces in the body chemistry.

Life threatening illnesses are not only more common but are more often fatal in the overweight. Even cancer, including some of the commonest types such as breast, colon and prostate, is associated with excess weight. Clearly, being the right weight is very important for health as well as beauty.

If you put health first and weight second, you will find that the weight eventually normalizes but it just does not seem to work the other way round. In the long run, adequate exercise and a positive, cheerful outlook are as important as diet for good health and lasting weight control.

Achieving the right weight has to be part of an ongoing life plan and not just an isolated scheme for a few weeks of months. Being the right weight involves the whole person, not just his eating habits.

The first thing in weight control is to come to terms with one’s body type and then to concentrate on getting healthy, because optimum health will ultimately lead to the right weight.

Many people are unhappy with their bodies, not appreciating the wonder of the overall design and the variations that are normal. Some are designed to be below average weight, some above but definitely none is intended to be obese.

Some people do put on weight much easily than others. Their metabolism is very economical and they burn less energy and have extra left over to store. Others have a different metabolism that tends to burn at higher rate and they just never seem to get fat no matter what they eat.
