Wellness Defined By A Drunken Sailor

Yesterday Dr Becky and I spent the day putting together long-term plans on how exactly we are going to get the message out and what are the things we can do to help people on their journey to 'Wellness’. We have always had a 3-tiered, balanced approach (Move Well, Eat Well, Think Well), and have tried to help transitions be easy and non-intrusive (you’re going to HAVE to change, but how can we do it so it’s as painless as possible!). We each have our causes that we champion, so to speak, and tend to think that everyone is on the same page as we are, and this is where the issues begin.

Let’s start with wellness, which is hard to define. It normally refers to a balance (mind, body, and spirit) and an overall feeling of well-being. The National Wellness Institute defines it as ‘An active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence’. I’m ok with this definition because it takes your focus off of being sick and puts it on being well. I do think it needs to go a step further though, more like ‘The constant, conscious pursuit of living life to its fullest potential’. Not only is the focus on being well, but it’s also about educating yourself and taking responsibility for your actions. THAT is what our jobs truly are; empowering people enough so they take control and live the life they truly desire.

The trouble is most people aren’t passionate about anything and just want to be/feel better, and not worry about understanding the why, what, when, and where of it all. From an allopath’s perspective, this means you have a residual income stream with a condition that will progressively get worse, re-treating it every 2 to 3 years and adding more and more prescriptions to deal with any new situational symptoms that arise and then all of the contraindications that pop up because of them (ie .. prescription drugs to handle conditions, then more prescriptions to handle the side-affect’s of the prescriptions, etc …).

It’s a bit more difficult from a holistic or homeopathic perspective. Real education is almost mandated along with decisions to change in ways that sometimes are scary and extremely uncomfortable! Take it beyond the obvious; just the thought of no cigarettes will send most smokers into a panic, or having to forgo that glass of wine with dinner is unthinkable (and these are the easy ones). What if you had a situation at your work place that needed to be changed or you identified a toxic personality in your circle? These would require a massive lifestyle altering decision, and ones most people will never be able to make unless 1) They understand what is happening and how it’s affecting them, and 2) How changing the behavior will truly make a foundational shift in their lives. Even then, it takes a leap of faith that takes a certain determination to be well to attain.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to meeting people where they are, and getting them to understand that even going a traditional route means they are taking a form of responsibility. Omar said it best ‘The moving finger writes; and, having writ moves on!’ Holistic healers have a bane to carry, and always seem to have to create credibility over and over again in the hopes of changing one person’s life for the better. Luckily most of those healers are passionate and have motives beyond just an income.

A very enlightening article Wayne and I really love the "Move Well. Eat Well. Think Well." philosophy. Great stuff. I'm really looking forward to my afternoon workout now! Thanks again.

What you talk about in your article is similar to what I'm currently reading in the 7 Habits by Stephen Covey. People are "lazy" by nature, once we find our comfort zone, as long as there isn't anything to upset it, we tend to not seek out any more than what we need. Covey calls it a "paradigm shift" or when something traumatic or life changing happens that forces you to see things in a different way. It can be very hard to see things from a different perspective but once you do, it opens up a whole world of possibilities. Thanks for the article!

Your article addresses typical human nature, Wayne. People get locked into a behavioral pattern and find it difficult to break loose. You can tell them over and over that cigarettes are not a good idea, and that reducing simple carbs in their diets will do their health a great deal of good, but until their pain exceeds the pleasure of smoking or eating lots of starches, they will stick to those bad habits. Also many of the things that allopathic doctors tell us make no sense, yet people hang on what the doctor says and they obey. I think alternative health care's time has come. Great article.
