What Is An Autoimmune Disease

Our immune system (or autoimmune system) works by preventing our bodies from getting unwell and if we do get unwell, our immune system works to help fight off the illness. Our immune system is specifically designed to recognise and attack any foreign or alien substances that are found in the body. The immune system then goes to work to fight these foreign or alien substances off so that our bodies are continuously protected against illness.

An autoimmune disease works by turning the immune system on itself leaving the body more exposed to illnesses, germs, and infection with little or no way to fight it off.

The immune system’s job is to protect every other structure in the body, defending it against parasites, bugs and fungus, which are intended to harm the body. An autoimmune disease harms or slows down the person’s immune system which means that their body’s first line of protection is gone.

Rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and psoriasis are all classed as autoimmune diseases. Some studies have shown that autoimmune disease could be triggered by exposure to pollution.

It’s no wonder really as chemicals continue to infiltrate and affect the quality of substances we need every day to survive, for example, the air we breathe and the water we drink. Even the foods we eat these days often hold many pollutants like herbicides and pesticides.

Refined Sugar is also thought of as another offender when it comes to bringing down the immune system. Refined sugar can be hard to cut out of our diets because it is used in so many things. There are sugars in numerous foods that we buy and consume during our normal daily lives.

Research shows that sugar can cause the immune system to stop functioning correctly within minutes. In fact it can only take around 30 minutes after eating or drinking something with refined sugar in it before the immune system starts to bomb and this can last for up to five hours or until all of the sugar is completely gone from the system.

If a person is affected by an autoimmune disease the reality is that sugar could put them at much greater risk for a more dangerous ailment and can leave their body totally powerless to fight off any viruses, germs or bacteria that they may come into contact with.

Simply put, autoimmune diseases upset the immune system and can leave the body more prone to diseases and illnesses.
