Neurofeedback is a type of training for the brain much like aerobic exercise is for your body. Real time displays (such as a software data program viewed on a computer screen) of electroencephalography (EEG) is used to monitor brain activity measured by frequency ranges and teach us self-regulation. Meaning we can train our brains for the purposes of enhancing our health and increasing our levels of performance.
The heart beats faster or slower depending on how much energy our body needs, directly effecting or physical state. The brain produces neurons or pulses that effect our mental ability and state of mind. The pulses are generally categorized slow, medium, and fast. All frequencies in proportion with one another are important for achieving a balanced and healthy state of mind.
Slow Pulses 0-8 Hz
Slower frequencies are Creative and Intuitive thought. You might characterize this state as processing with our sub-conscious and unconscious mind. A state of being inside our heads, thinking with pictures, jumping to conclusions and seeing the overall big picture.
Fast Pulses 12-38 Hz
Fast frequencies are related to Logical and Rational thought. Paying attention to specifics by way of language, sequences, and details in an organized way.
Medium Pulses 8-15 Hz
Slow and fast brain activity are equally important. The Medium frequency is the meditative or prayer state of mind. A person in this state is aware of their subconscious and conscious mind. They are able to see whats going on in their subconscious mind, I'm feeling sad or angry, and think about it with their conscious mind. Instead of only being able to feel it. You might say that the medium frequency state of mind is one of being in the now enabling you to flow with life. Able to do things you know without spending a lot of thought or energy doing them.
A person stuck in a slow frequency will have a mental challenge paying attention or keeping up with a moving conversation. Often characterized by Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). While a person that only produces fast frequencies will tend to be overly detailed, intellectualizing, and analyzing. Over thinking most situations, that person may be called anxious and even subject to panic attacks.
Most of us don't have an EEG machine with computer software to tell us what brains activity is. But through self observation, brain training games, meditation, and prayer, we can begin to help ourselves.
Recommend reading: The Power Of Now by Eckhart Tolle, Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz, and The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy. Science has proven that the brain can be retrained so why not give a try.
I suppose that it takes very fast pulses to use critical thinking to the best of your ability. I guess that`s why it wears people out so fast.
