Childlike Perspective

I was sitting in the city park today having my lunch and just enjoying the beautiful blue sky and gentle breeze when a group of high school kids on excursion came and settled nearby for their lunch. As I watched them break out into their own social groupings, I remembered back when I was in senior year and how I thought I had a great perspective on things.

Fast forward 15 years (wow) and I am sitting in the park smiling at the exuberance of youth right before my eyes.

It’s funny how when you are at that age you know absolutely everything about everything. You’ve totally got it going on and literally your whole life is ahead of you. It’s the beautiful age where you still have that precious childlike wonderment and also a sense of maturity and self-awareness.

For me it was at that age that I started to gain a little bit of perspective on my life and my place in the world.

I believe more than ever when you become an adult in order to be able to live a happy and productive life, it requires being able to have a healthy perspective and this means we all still need a touch of that childlike wonderment, coupled with maturity.

Perspective means to see through, to have the ability to see something from another position.

That same thing can mean something to one person and a totally different thing to another. So how on earth does anyone get along if this happens all the time? By consciously choosing to engage our hearts and our minds - for this is true communication.

We can look at something from many different points of view and just having this ability allows us to learn so much more. Things are not always what they seem. A whole new story can unfold if we’re willing to have an open mind and ask questions. It’s like being at a crossroads with an infinity number of choices.

Perspective is a really handy tool whenever faced with something that challenges your ideals and beliefs. Being able to look at the same event, issue or person through ‘another set of eyes’ is invaluable to moving forward.

Like lighting a candle in the dark, I find perspective allows me to see more clearly and therefore take a more balanced approach to life and all its ups and downs.

Without utilizing perspective engineers would not being able to create and design such amazing feats of architecture. Looking at a drawing concept from ‘all the angles’, they use this process to make their masterpieces.

And it’s the same in life too. Getting to that place where you stop and find perspective is a worthwhile investment indeed. Especially if you are feeling stuck in a situation, consider all your options and then take action.

Your stories, comments and feedback always welcome.

I enjoyed the article. I think that having children has helped me to see things from a child's perspective again. Fascinating! I don't have to relive it for myself, but through their eyes- which are all different.

Your welcome Heather. I think I am a visual learner, meaning I need to paint myself a picture to grasp the concept. Glad you enjoyed.

Yeah, having a childlike perspective can make you live a productive life. We have knowledge & experience on our side as adults, and this is something that the children are still acquiring. But the children are full of life and positive attitude - something that some of us lose a little bit as we grow up. So, going back and mixing things with the childlike viewpoint can actually be very useful. Thank you for the good idea Carmen.

Lovely article, how wise we were in days of yore, although a long time back for me still fresh in mind. I just wish I could go back but this time with the knowledge I have now.
