Fear Of Failure Symptoms

You are nervously sitting outside at your CEO office, waiting for your turn to present your proposal. Cold sweats start to break on your forehead. You start to imagine how if this proposal is rejected, or worse ridiculed, you will lose your job and with it you’ll lose your home, ability to feed your children and possibly your marriage. You knew you should been better prepared and did more research. You probably shouldn’t have gone out with your buddies the night before. This fictitious situation actually illustrate a few fear of failure symptoms.

Many of us suffer from fear of failure but not many actually realize it. In this article, I will present 10 common symptoms but before we proceed with the 10 symptoms, lets define it. Fear of failure is quite simply negative emotions associated with possibility of failure. As in most fear, it is always taken out of proportion, i.e. the imagined results are almost always worse than reality. When we are in fear, we often imagined wild worst-case scenarios and then some.

The followings are 10 common symptoms of fear of failure:

1. While doing important task, you get distracted and this eventually affects the quality.

2. When face with important task, you like to put it off until the last minute, in other word you procrastinate. The result often, as in the scenario above, you lack preparation.

3. You get very nervous; often more than usual that leads to perspiration, stomachache, shallow breathing and other physical manifestations.

4. Very often, you’ll tell yourself and others that you will not get the optimum result to lower expectation to yourself and to others.

5. You’re overly worried what others think of you.

6. You’re overly worried about disappointing love ones.

7. You’re overly worried that you are not smart enough or have enough resources for an important task.

8. You’re constantly worry about how your possible failure will affect your future, often blowing things out of proportion.

9. Anything new makes you apprehensive and you are not willing to try them.

10. You are a perfectionist to a point that you will not present your work at all (no matter what the cost) unless it is “perfect”.

Even though there’s no quick fix to overcome fear of failure, you can take steps to conquer and subdue it. Recognizing and admitting your have it is the first step. My next article will present next several steps that can be taken to conquer fear of failure.
