When getting into a confrontation the best thing you can do is try to get away from the situation. If you can’t get away from the situation then you usually have to deal with the problem right then and there. There usually isn’t time to make a phone call for help, if you can run do it. Keep in mind a street fight has no rules, you need to make it home and make it there safely. When engaging in a combat on the street there are no rules, but there are principles one can use to make sure they get home safe. Here are a two simple tactics that were taught to me and are the basics of dealing with a confrontation.
First you must relax. Try to reason and talk it out. The worst thing that can happen to you is you lose your focus on the goal. At that moment of confrontation your goal is get out
of danger, you need to make it home. By relaxing your staying focus, you breathe your lose and ready to react. The more relaxed you are the looser you will feel. The looser you feel the faster you body will move and react to counter whatever this attacker throws at you.
By relaxing you also prevent unnecessary injury to yourself. If you are tense and you move to fast you may end up pulling a muscle. This first step of relaxing happens at the moment you think or feel something is about to happen. It is that anticipation of a fight or confrontation that gets your brain thinking all over, your body may freeze or start shaking. Just breathe and relax, because if your really about to fight your better off being calm about it. That also may throw off your attacker, he may start wondering why you are so calm, “what does he know that I don’t”.
Second is know your area, know your surroundings. This is very important. Getting backed into a corner could be good or bad pending on what type of confrontation your in. If your being jumped having a wall behind you may be good because you know no one will be behind you, but also you can only move forward, and forward is through whoever your fighting. Know where the exits are. Knowing this can lead to a QUICK get a way. You may be fighting see a exit give one good push or what ever will work at the time and dash out of there. Know where the bar is or if there are tables. There are potential weapons there, bottles, glasses, chairs, etc.
These two principles can surely help you out in a confrontation. Relaxing your body preparing it for battle instead of getting worked up maybe be the most important. You actually want your attacker to be the crazy one flipping out because he’s not thinking clearly. You the calm one sees what he is going to do a mile away. If you were choked up though getting scared you react poorly and be totally out of focus and doing more damage to yourself then the attacker would of. Even if your not in a fight or about to get into one relaxing is beneficial in every way. You have a problem relax breathe think it through. Blowing up only harms yourself and possibly people around you.
Knowing your area is key. Always even if you are out for dinner or a movie, know your surroundings. Know where the exits are where a fire extinguisher is. These are very basic tactics that any ordinary person with no martial art or combat training can do and and apply everyday.
