I tried looking on several high ranked websites to find one that would actually reveal how to get a raise from your boss. Unfortunately, there was not a single website that gave you the exact step by step process to help you ask for a raise the right way.
I got fed up with it, so I decided to write this article to give you the exact communication tools you need that will allow you the highest probability of getting a raise. Of course, this must be based on the premise that you are really doing a great job already.
Now, how to get a raise from your boss is a tricky situation. You don’t want to sound too arrogant and tell your boss you deserve a raise because you are just awesome. But you also don’t want to sound insecure about it.
The worst thing you can do when you go get a raise from your boss is to go up to your boss and say: “I want a raise!” Your boss’s first question will probably be: Why? And you can bet they will put you on a kicker for next time when they see you. Now you have become a threat and all you wanted is to be more recognized for your efforts. So let’s not do that.
The Method In Theory
Most people go up to their boss and the first underlying statement they make is: “I want something from you!” But what if instead you would go to your boss and the statement would be: “I have more to offer and I want to make your life easier!” Your chances just went up 100%! Instead of wanting something you are offering something for your boss to take. Here is, in a nutshell, what successful business owners told me when I asked them how they would like someone to ask for a raise: “When they want to take on more responsibility.” Now that you know that, let’s get to the mechanics on how to get a raise from your boss.
The Method in Practice R.A.I.S.E
Raise his/her value
Raise your boss’s value and show him/her how valuable you feel this company is for you. You will make your boss feel good and also have the opportunity to show your appreciation.
Example: I really enjoy working here, I think you have built a great company and I really am happy to be part of the team. (Be honest).
Ask For More Responsibility
And because you enjoy working here so much and love the company you can see yourself taking on more responsibility for the company to further your boss’s goals.
Example: “The reason why I wanted to talk to you is because I want to do more for the company. I love the company and I really would like to become more valuable to further our goals.”
As you can see, we are not immediately asking for a raise, we are asking if we can do something for the boss instead of letting the boss give us more for the same value. Now you have become a partner with the same goals to your boss instead of a bloodsucker who just wants more for doing the same job.
The Idea
Offer a plan of 30-90 days period where you can proof yourself to your boss. Show that you are worthy of taking on more responsibility.
Example: My idea would be to come up with something together where I can proof to you during a 30-90 day period that I am capable of adding more value to the company.
Sell Your Idea
Of course taking on more responsibility and becoming more value has a price tag. Ask your boss if he/she would be open to discussing a raise if you can proof yourself worthy.
Example: If I can proof myself to you during this period of time would it be possible to discuss the possibility of a raise?
Enclose
In this final step, it is important to be clear on the conditions you are going to set for the next 30 to 90. It will be important for your boss to track your results and to determine if you are worth the additional cost. I would come up at the end of your meeting with a number for your raise in mind after setting the conditions and the extra responsibility.
Conclusion
Ask yourself if you are in a position to ask for a raise in the first place. What could you do to further your boss’s goals even more? Is there anything that you could do to earn a raise? What could you do to improve the life of your boss? Have your boss in mind and make his/her life easier then you are definitely on the right foot.
Companies want to keep the employees that add value to them. A smart company will give the people that deserve a raise a higher compensation naturally. Ask yourself what you are bringing to the table. If you feel like you really are bringing more value than you are compensated use the R.A.I.S.E method to get what you are worth.
Happy fundraising!
