Need to Know - Keeping Your Brain Functioning

Do you have issues retaining knowledge? Would you like to be able to think more quickly? Did you know there are number of things that you can do to make your brain stronger? There is a reason they call it veging. Like the rest of your body, you need to exercise your brain.

Your brain needs to be worked on a regular basis. People seek out “educational” toys for their kids but what about in adulthood. The games that you play or the shows you watch may not be working your brain out at all. Television shows follow certain patterns to move the story along and provide all of the details for you, which is why “the butler did it”.

Here is a list of a couple of activities that could help you to make better use of that knowledge muscle:

1. Read – Did you know the average adult reads less than 4 books a year? Sometimes, you can even tell the knowledge level of a person by how many books they have in their house. Most people don’t have the extra income anymore to just buy books for show, so books provide them with the knowledge they seek.

2. Keep good company – Does your water cooler gossip center around the latest cop drama or office romance? Although, these topics can be entertaining, they are not very helpful for anyone. Try talking about the current state of the economy, world politics, or something a bit more intellectual next time.

3. Keep physically fit. You should exercise at least 3 times a week and eat healthy foods. You should get a good night’s sleep too. Have you noticed the upsurge in energy products? You can save that money by going to the gym and getting the right amount of sleep. . If the body is always tired, it will create laziness.

4. Make up a story – Creativity requires the brain to actually think about what comes next or what the characters are doing. You can watch television but all of these items are provided for you. Get a group of friends together and have someone start a story. As the story progresses, pass the story to the next person to take it elsewhere.

5. Listen to music – Music can create emotions in people and cause people to think about things they normally wouldn’t. Whether it is a fantasy or a real event, the brain has to give the event thought.

By doing a few of these things or all of these things should help your brain to function well. You will find that you are more alert, able to be more productive. So get out there and exercise that brain.
