Do you think you are an open-minded person?
Here is a test which can tell if you are an open-minded person, or you are a close-minded person.
Question 1:
The current education system is totally rubbish and it need a good overhaul, subjects like Calculus and Chemistry should not be teach in high school at all. I will tell you the reason.....
Question 2:
Children over seven years old should be able manage their own homework and make their own lunch and breakfast. I will tell you the reason.....
There are 4 answers to choose from for both of these questions:
- You totally disagree with me.
- You somewhat disagree with me.
- You wonder why I say that.
- You want to know and you asked me why I say that.
So after answering these two questions, you just add the answer's numbers together and that is your score. For example, if your answers are 1 and 2, then your score is 3.
If your score is low then you are a close-minded person. If your score is 8 - the highest score - you are a very open-minded person.
As you might or might not know. A open-minded people is someone who's mind is open and always ready to accept new ideas. They are good listeners and good learners. They do not judge anything so quickly without knowing the fact.
That is why children learn faster and easier than adult. For they do not judge what is right or wrong when they are taught. Their little brains will digest the information first before they make any judgement. As for adults, some of us will make up our mind if someone is right or wrong, even before the person has finished his sentence.
As for the close-minded people, you have already judged I was wrong. You disagreed without knowing why I said that. Don't be upset with me because it is just who you are and you are not going to change.
Now I am going to tell you my reason for the statement I made in question 1.
Can you tell me how many students who learn calculus will be able to use it when they get a job?
One out of a million perhaps. Excluding those that are maths teachers - maths teachers are just teaching it to their students and they are not actually using it so they don't count. If only one in a million students is able to make use of this knowledge, so why are we teaching it. Just for fun? Would the students be able to make use of the time to learn something that will benefit them in the future?
They could teach calculus for students who really needs it; perhaps in some university courses.
As for chemistry. My son - who is in high school - told me today that he has to memorize the carbon bonding structure in polymers. I told him, "I don't think you will use it in the future."
He chuckled.
Sorry, I didn't tell you my reason for question 2. It was intentional, I want you to tell me your opinion about it. If you enjoy my story, you can visit my website. I have more mind provoking articles for you.
Signing off.

I agree that calculus should not be taught to everyone in high school, but I definitely think it should be taught to those who want to learn. Mathematics is the only reason I like school. I wasted nearly an entire year of math this year because I had to take pre-calculus before I took calculus. I love math and I think calculus should be offered for those who want it and are ready for it! The same goes for chemistry, physics, etc., if you like chemistry and are interested you should be able to be taught, but I don't think they should be required. I agree with what you say in question 2. More life skills should be taught starting at a young age and all through high school. Also I think by the time students get to high school they should be split based on their strengths. I know some people who hate math yet are required to take pre-calculus. Our education system is a huge waste of time for some people. If I had been split into a purely mathematic lesson plan when I became a freshman, I wouldn't have wasted all my time on baloney classes like world history. Who knows? I might be ready for university-level mathematics courses for a specific career/degree by now. If only. :(
Thank you for your comment. I totally agree with you and you have nailed this. Students should be allow to choose subjects that they like. In the school system, they should have compulsory subjects like simple Maths, Science or Chemistry, etc. Also some optional subjects, like further maths or calculus. The fact is 80% of what you learned in school which you will never use in your entire lifetime. What a waste of time. You might be a mathematician by now if you have not wasted all those time. Never mind. Congratulation. You are a open-minded person. A loving, fun and wise person. Our world need more people like you. I wish you all the best. MisterWailor
