The Memory Palace— Get A Perfect Memory

ATTENTION: This is a interactive post.

Would you believe it is possible to gain an almost supernatural ability to memorize things? Well I am here to tell you, YOU CAN! Not only that, I am going to show you how you can do it. Have you ever heard of the world memory championships? These are normal guys who memorize decks of cards in 30 seconds flat! How do they do it? The answer is: The memory palace technique.

This is a VERY simple and easy to learn technique that can help you remember and memorize anything you want, facts, names, and if you go beyond this you can even memorize entire books the same type of techniques.

Preparing For Memorization

Before we get to memorizing, let's get a list of things we want to memorize and turn them into images. For this, we will use a combination of different things. Facts, information, etc..

The first element we want to memorize is: The liquid in young coconuts can be used as a substitute for blood plasma. We need to take this and transform it into a picture. For me, as gross as it may sound, it is a coconut filled with blood... Let's change that to "red dye" so it's not AS disturbing. :) NOTE: It is highly recommended you use your own pictures unless these resonate with you.

After you get a picture for it, look at your picture and say the fact in your head a few times, so it is well known.

The second element we want to memorize is: Concentration is the laser of human consciousness. For me this is a paper (concentration) getting shot with a huge laser (is the laser) covered in an aura of holy light (of human consciousness.) Again, for you this may be very different :) Once you have that view the image and say the fact a few times in your head.

The third element is: Milk. Maybe you want to go to the store without a shopping list? Well now you can! For this item it's as simple as picturing a glass of milk!

Now we have three very different types of information. A fact, a concept, and a grocery item.

I bet if I said what is a young coconut filled with "blood" You could tell me: The liquid in young coconuts can be used as a substitute for blood plasma. ;) That's great in all but HOW DO WE BRING THESE UP WHENEVER WE WANT?? Normally you would have to have a trigger to get that information out of your head (like a question.) But there is a way to trigger it on command, that is where the memory palace comes in!

The Memory Palace

The concept here is we take a mental stroll through our house (or anywhere we are familiar with) and store information on the things we pass. For this we only need three items so it will be easy. Let me guide you through the process. This is a mental journey and should be done in your head.

Stand on your door step. What do you see? If your like me, it is probably your door. There we go we already have one place to memorize info! Your door. Open your door. What is the next thing you see? For me it is my lamp. Then travel clockwise around your room until you spot then next item. I got a chair. So we singled out three items with the memory palace technique, for me it was:

My door, my lamp, and my chair.

These are what we will use to memorize the information we already recorded onto pictures.

Putting It All Together

Finally, we are ready to memorize, and have fun while doing it!! This part is simple, we just imagine our facts and concepts connected to our memory palaces! Take the first item we saw on our mental stroll: The door and the first fact "young coconuts liquid can be used as a substitute for blood plasma" in other words, a coconut with *ahem* red dye and imagine the coconut with red dye crashing into the door splashing the dye all over the door and the coconut slightly damaged. It truly is as simple as that!!

Lets go to out next item a lamp imagine the paper is crumpled and thrown at the lamp with the laser beam hitting it too everything is glowing with a "holy light." We just memorized "concentration is the laser of human consciousness."

Lastly, look at the chair—or whatever you chose—and place the milk on it, you can even imagine the milk spilling.

We look at the items in our house again, the door, the lamp, and the chair, it will automatically bring back those pictures, which tells us the memorized information! How cool is that?

Conclusion

While this technique certainly won't get you to the level of memorizing entire books, you'll need to find a more advanced system to do that, but it can certainly get you started on a journey like no other. You will be able to stun and amaze your friends and drastically cut down your studying time. Techniques like this are almost mandatory if you really want to live your life to the fullest.

I'm enjoying pondering this Brandon. It feels like exercise (which for the mind I imagine it is). The problem with exercise is that I want it but I don't want to 'do' it! I find it fascinating all the same. Are you familiar with eye patterns. For example our visual recall or construct is looking upward. I encourage my kids to 'see' their words written in the air in different colours. This is also linked to an auditory and kinaesthetic cue which all work together to help them remember. Interestingly, kids (or people) who can't spell often look down and they're accessing their kinaesthetic (or feeling) centre. It's not possible to access the spelling by 'feeling' it... especially when the associated feelings to spelling are bad. I may have gone off on a tangent with this although this is an angle I relate to.

This is a very interesting topic... I'd say I have a pretty good memory. Probably not as good as yours though... I know it sucks when you're about to say something, somebody interrupts or keeps on talking, then you forget what you were about to say. lol. GL with this.

Lol that's a classic pattern interrupt! Not necessarily a memory problem. A good exercise is: ask the other person what you were talking about before (unless you remember) as in the topic. This can jog your memory and provide you with an answer. thanks!
