The power of the unconscious mind has been demonstrated in many cultures spanning many era’s. There are those people who are so ‘in tune’ with their own ‘self’ that they have healed or created great things simply through, it would seem, the power of the mind.
The start of this for many of us is positive thinking. Most people can relate to the benefits that this brings them in their daily lives. Even an illness or a negative experience feels somewhat more manageable when one has an attitude of gratitude.
At the risk of being topical, and with these thoughts in mind, I have often wondered at the propensity for western medicine to pronounce death sentences on its patients.
I can only imagine the shock, distress and fear heaped upon a person when a doctor in authority (commonly known as a medical ‘professional’) announces how long a person has to live.
I can’t see any useful or positive point to this practice other than giving someone a heads up on how long they have to pay off their funeral plan. The moment a patient accepts this message the unconscious mind will go about setting up the events to support the belief.
The firm rejection of this belief is why there are a percentage of people who defy the doctors’ predictions and go on to live full and meaningful lives or at least an extended life expectancy beyond the norm.
This scenario has helped me to understand a quote ascribed to William Blake that is held in esteem by many natural therapists, particularly those in the fields of energy healing.
“I must create a system or be enslaved in another person’s. I must not reason nor compare. My business is to create”.
The moment we accept another persons ‘model of the world’ (their system) we give away our personal power to create the life and the belief system that is best for ourselves.
It is like driving along a freeway in the dark, with the headlights of a truck bearing towards us, while the doctor (or other well meaning person) says “Look at that truck coming… it’s going to hit you full on!”
A person who has a positive view of the world, and is willing to create and act on their own internal belief system with the view of healing, will still be on this same road. The difference is that they’ll be focused past the truck, watching the road and confident of getting to their desired destination.
This morning I read of one lady who had lived many years past her predicted used by date. She laughed when the doctor, with teary eyes, pronounced her death sentence. His solution was to refer her to a psychologist as she obviously was in denial and needed convincing that she would die.
She read positive books, ripping out the pages that didn’t apply to her belief system (creating her own system), indulged in energy healing and when undergoing brain surgery asked her brain to take the information and memories stored in that part of her brain (that was removed) and preserve them elsewhere. She went on to have a full and miraculous life against all medical predictions.
My own journey with a health issue was a rollercoaster ride. The Doctor scared and depressed me. I ran straight to a natural energy healer and left feeling positive and assertive. It was like I was listening to two completely different systems. One was staying “Look at the truck!” The other was encouraging “Keep your eyes on the road!” In the long run I was ‘sensible’ and had surgery, as the doctor recommended, which proved that the energy healer had been right in his wisdom all along.
My aim is to live life from a positive and goal focused perspective. It will likely be too late to avoid the truck if we’ve already swerved into the oncoming lane to get a better look at the headlights.
Excellent article Sherry. Psychologists do say that we are a product of our environment. However, we do have the power to change our environment. If a doctor tells you that you are going to die, he is indeed pronouncing a death sentence. Don't forget though, doctors "practice" medicine, which means they still have not got it right. Proverbs 23:7 states that "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he". We are the only ones that have the power to change our thoughts to whatever we want them to be. You and I, and all of us, have the power to decide what we want our realities to be and it has been proved scientifically. It is no longer just homespun wisdom. Blessings!
Really just stopped by to say "Hi" and decided to do it here; this is one of my favorite refreshment articles! Think of you and your articles often as I pour myself into bed lately :-0 (yawn) I am having a great time teaching "Intro to Computers for Adults” and Dragon... Love It! but miss the camaraderie from over here at Street Articles!
Thanks for stopping by Sherry. Not writing as much as I was here at the moment. I'm working some and packing up the house to move. Also trying to get a website happening and there's just not enough hours. Lovely of you to think of me and wonderful to hear things are going well for you. xo PS I'm going to have to cancel my email address and get one that is more accessible to me anywhere in the world. When I have it I will let you know via WA messaging.
LIke every experience I've handled it better in retrospect! Thanks for your kind comment.
I have often been amused that something bad happens (like my detached retina a couple of years ago) and then I find myself saying "I'm so lucky...." when explaining it to people. So I guess that means we're on the same team! ;-)
Heather, I have always been fascinated by the mind. I haven't given it much thought for several years. This article brought many of those thoughts rushing back. It's good to have them back. Thanks for a great article.
To me, Heather, this subject is the razor's edge--on one side, we share an existence with others and must, by definition, be influenced by that sharing--on the other side, we each have our own centers-of-the-universe within ourselves, and we each must be ourselves, inviolate, if our lives are to have meaning. To accept a doctor's diagnosis is the Sensible thing to do--have you ever noticed that 'Sensible' only has meaning in a community? When we are by ourselves, thinking for ourselves, isn't Everything we think 'sensible'? And how do we distinguish the dividing line between self-evident truth and shared truth, from the dividing line between peer-pressure and self-delusion? Doctors aren't infallible, but they also can't always be wrong about a terminal diagnosis. Some of the people they examine are really going to die soon, whether the doctor predicts it or not--how do we reconcile those possibilities with the possibility that the doctor is creating a death sentence by predicting one? I hate to be the doubting thomas in this group, but I have had an enormous immersion in standardized medicine and it's greatest hit---the organ transplant. At no time did I feel that my ill health could be shaken off by a positive outlook or worsened by a negative one. As with all things spiritual, my life has never included any moment at which I truly felt that there was anything more to existence than what I could clearly see before me. It isn't that I want to disagree with you, heather, it's just that I can't do otherwise. However, if your way works for you, I wouldn't dare to try and take that away or talk you out of it.
Thank you for your comments Christopher. They are valid and very much respected. I'm sure others would share your truth. Were I in the same situation it's likely I would be looking at all my options and probably choosing more than one of them. I like that we can all express our thoughts and opinions here and the environment is 'safe'. I must admit that this very fact has allowed me to move out of my comfort zone to share some of my 'truths' that others may find totally ludicrous.
Well, 'ludicrous' is a strong term. Like me, you have to go by experience--if your experience is judged in-credible by others, that is their problem. It doesn't change what you have experienced. Personally, I'm more inclined to be jealous of such experiences--how nice it must be to have a sense of mystery about our destiny, instead of my own clinical balancing of optimism and pessimism. And please stay in that comfort zone--you, too, are valid and very much respected.
I was hoping that Wayne would go into great detail about HIS story.....It's amazing. He chose to IGNORE the traditional medical community and is here to be a pain in all our butts!!! Had he listened.....he'd be dead. Seriously, he'd be dead. And my son would be stuck in a 6-year old shell. I am sooooo glad that God gave us FREE WILL to make choices that resonate with us....Living as a lemming will never be empowering. Thank you, Heather for such a thought-provoking article.
Wow, thank you for such positive reinforcement of the concept Dr Becky! I love your image of 'living as a lemming'. It's a classic! lol
Very nice article Heather. I hope this will reach others who are struggling because of bad news they hear about their lives or health. How we think has great impact on how we live. And a positive mind can do a lot of wonders and most certainly can defy the doctor’s predictions.
Thank you Lemuel. It's a nice thought that an article can reach another in a positive way to help.
Yes! Go somewhere where the truck isn't:-) Heather, I've had a lot of those you're going to die things - evidently prayer and visualization helps me to step beyond the truck.
You are an inspiration Cynthia! Your comment makes me smile a mile wide!
