Hello Friends! I'm going to share with you here some tips to maintain your iphone batteries so that it will last you longer before you ever need to change it.
Every battery has a certain lifespan which is usually given by the manufacturer in number of charging cycles before its capacity to hold a charge reduces.
Iphone batteries are Lithium-based batteries regardless of the model or generation of your iPhone. The type of battery will tell us certain characteristics that will help us to better understand how to maintain it.
Lithium-ion batteries are affected by the temperature that it is exposed to. Exposing your battery to high temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius or higher can be damaging and may decrease your battery's capacity to hold a charge, which leads us to tip no. 1.
1. Keep your iPhone away from hot environments
As I have said it is a characteristic of Lithium-based batteries to decrease its capacity when exposed to high temperatures.
So don't even dare leaving it in your car especially when you are parked in a spot exposed to sunlight.
It is best to keep your iPhone at room temperature or at least close to it. It may not appear to affect your battery right away or drastically affect your battery's performance, but it will surely shorten your lifespan in the long run.
2. Take off your casing when charging your iPhone
Most casing will cause your battery to heat up in the middle of charging.
I have experienced this myself when I charged my iPhone with the casing still on it. After a couple of minutes, I realized that my iPhone was heating up really bad.
Again, avoid high temperatures for your battery at all cost. So if it means removing your casing every time you want to charge your iPhone, then you're better off doing so than leaving it on your phone.
3. Do not fully discharge your battery
Contrary to popular belief your iPhone battery doesn't have a "memory effect" unlike Nickel Cadmium type of batteries. This means, you don't have to fully discharge your battery and then fully charge it again to better maintain its capacity.
If your battery gets too low, it could have irreversible damage to it.
A lot of people have the wrong belief that charging your battery often even if it's not yet fully discharged will shorten its battery lifespan. It doesn't work that way in Lithium-based batteries. You are better off charging it often rather than fully discharging it before you charge.
However, I don't recommend leaving your iPhone charging even if it's completely charged already.
A good practice that I'm doing is to charge your iPhone right away when you get home or have access to a power outlet. Every time I get home from work, my iPhone is usually at 40 to 50% of its battery, so it is a good idea to start charging at this state and remove it right away when it gets to a 100%.
So those are the 3 tips to maintain your iPhone battery, and I hope by applying them you get to prolong your battery lifespan and save yourself some bucks for a couple of months.
Battery technology has come a long, long way..smaller, lighter more powerful..yet still somewhat delicate in temp extremes. A good article to remind folks how to keep them up to snuff.
Good to know about not letting the battery get too low. I always let my regular cell phone go all the way down. I'll remember this when I get an IPhone.
This applies to all lithium-based batteries Steve, and I reckon most of the phones if not all are using the same type of battery. The iphone actually has a protection system that it shuts down itself before the battery gets completely depleted, but it still is a good precaution to not let it get to this stage if at all possible. So if you have a chance to charge your phone even if it's still at 40 or 50%, do so.
Your welcome!:) I'm glad you have something practical to apply to your situation. High temperatures are definitely the worst enemies for these lithium-based batteries like the one on the iPhone, so finding a way to keep them from hot environments would really help lengthen your battery lifespan.
Thanks for the tips Jan! I always have a problem with having my phone getting low bat immediately. Now I know how to make the life span of it longer.
Thanks Jan informative article for those with iphone's, I still use a bit of a brick, but it is weather proof something I need.
