Ascending The Heights Of Budget: Huawei Ascend Y330 Review

One of the best new budget smartphones of 2014 is the Huawei Ascend Y330 which has just hit the stores in black or white variants.

If you are looking to break away from Samsung, Apple or HTC then Huawei will give you excellent value for your buck. And, this budget smartphone has dropped its physical keyboard in favour of the more popular full touch screen layout.

Let us take a look at what the Ascend Y330 delivers:

Huawei Ascend Y330 features

  • Camera - A 3 megapixel shooter is on board and for its money this isn't too bad at all. Both video and still images can be recorded.
  • Screen - A 4-inch FWVGA display is installed and this promises a bright screen that will be perfect for viewing your social networking updates or finding a number from the phone book without a squint! The screen size also means that this cell phone fits into what other manufacturers might call ‘mini’.
  • Processing power - A 1.3Ghz dual-core processor is featured on the Y330 and this will support downloads at up to 21 Mbps. This performance will be plenty enough for viewing catch-up TV and gaming.
  • UI - The user interface can be set to suit its user and this works well for the market it is intended for. Elderly, people with impaired vision or those just looking for an easy experience will enjoy the Simple UI that has been designed with a clearer layout including much larger menu icons. Otherwise, previous smartphone users should choose the Emotion UI for the fully featured smartphone experience.
  • Battery - The 1500 mAh battery isn't the biggest we have seen, in fact we have seen batteries up to and over 3000 mAh. However this shouldn't be an issue as the mobile phone is running a dual-core processor instead of a quad-core and the screen size is a good inch smaller than those seen on high-end smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Opinion

The only negative that I see is that Huawei could have done a little more with the design. There really isn't a lot that catches the eye although it isn't ugly, just run of the mill.

A little etching here and a few accents there could have made the handset stand out a little more. This said I do like the white color choice as this trims the black surround of the display nicely.

In the UK you can pick this device up for less than £6 per month on a contract, so it really is a great buy for those who don’t want a big monthly payment hitting their bank account.
