Downloading, installing, and running anonymous surfing software for Android phones and tables is easier than you think. I am by no means a tech wizard, and I've not only figured out how to use it, but also write about, and advise people on what type of software they should use. It's actually pretty easy (most of the time). Here are a few recommendations.
You'll be using a VPN if anonymity is important to you while you use the internet. Though proxies do change your IP address, they certainly don't do a very good job of keeping you anonymous. In fact, some proxies, called 'transparent' proxies don't even hide your IP (they only use the proxy IP to request the websites you browse. There are other security issues with proxies, but I won't get into it here.
PPTP
One type of VPN you might want to use on your android is called PPTP. It's generally easier to install, and runs faster. This is good for someone who wants to unblock websites, or stream TV from other countries with an anonymous IP. Though PPTP doesn't use advanced encryption like other types of VPN, it may be suitable for users looking for fast connections and decent levels of anonymity online.
L2TP/IPSec
If you're looking for true anonymity, privacy, and security while browsing the internet, you need L2TP/IPSec. It'll most likely be available at the same places as PPTP, so you can switch between the two as you see fit. L2TP is a second generation VPN with some major improvements from PPTP. It also uses an improved form of encryption called L2TP (versus PPP of PPTP VPN).
If you're looking for a VPN because you want the government, advertisers, and especially other users out of your business, then L2TP is the way to go. It's a bit more complicated to set up, but most VPN services will provide instructions with pictures to help you get set up with minimal snags.
VPN Services & Features
Pretty much all VPN services will offer these two VPN protocols. Finding the VPN for Android will be as simple as clicking on the correct logo after setting up an account with the VPN service of your choice. Prices will range from a few dollars a month to 20 or more, depending on the particular package you choose. Server locations will also vary. The US and UK are probably the most widely available, but there are many other locations in Europe, Asia, South America, and other parts of the world. Setup will vary based on the service and the version of Android you're using.
