It's happened again, another Blackberry Smart phone outage. According to Politico the federal government is calling it the "Black-pocalyse". As the only federally approved Smartphone for many government agencies it has people wondering just how "smart," this decision really is. As a relative of an employee of a local government in Virginia after the last blackout and numerous problem with their data just being completely wiped out they have made the switch to Apple Smart phones. This seems to be a smart move since they are responsible for any fire and rescue emergencies at the Pentagon. Many Capital Hill politicians and staff were stuck at their desks and not being available for meeting due to not receiving emails through blackberry's Internet service.
Makers of the Blackberry, announced that the service outage was due to a "core switch" problem in Canada which started an affect in service first Monday in the Middle East, Europe, and Africa before spreading to South America on Tuesday. It's seems that text messaging and emails were the most affects as the ability to accept and send out calls were not. Canada was also affected, this crippled communications with customers using the Blackberry for millions of users across the globe.
This is not the first time this the company has been in the spotlight for this problem. Back on December of 2009, Blackberry users were smacked with an eight out blackout the second for customers in less then seven days with no explanation from the company. At that time it was estimated that over one hundred thousand customers were without email and Internet service.
Rim the company who owns the phone service has taken quite a fall behind competitor's Apple and Googles Android's software in the market. This will new outage especially so far spread will not be helping them get any further ahead. It will be a surprise to me if the federal government will continue to federally approve this phone for it's use. Hundreds of thousands of CEO's, banker, politicians, and federal law enforcement agents depend on this equipment to be reliable and only so many problems will be tolerated or should be.
A Blackberry spokesman, Marisa Conway something to say for the company's defense to Bloomberg Business Week . During the recent Earthquake this summer that hit in Mineral, Virginia and was felt all the way to Maine she had this to say, "Rims service has operated normally all day". In the comapnies defense I must say being outside in Washington D.C. for three hours after the quake many different phone services were not operating, no calls, text, or emails. Not being an expert in this field I do not know exactly what the problem was. .
Lastly Rim has told customers that they are working on a "core switch"' problem since all messages are routed to Canada first that is where the problem is being working on vigorisly and it will be resolved as soon as possible they regret any inconvenice that has caused their customers.
