Pptp Or L2tp VPN for Android - Making the Decision Easier

There are many write ups on what kind of virtual private network you should use for Android phones and tablets. The problem is that many don't make it clear that VPNs can be used for a variety of things. What you use the private network connection for will influence what kind of VPN you should get. I would divide it basically into two categories - one for entertainment, and one for privacy. Easily enough, there are basically two types of VPNs for Android - PPTP and L2TP. As you might have guessed one type of virtual private network connection matches one type of use. Finding a VPN for Android isn't that difficult, though some bloggers might make you think differently.

PPTP VPN for Android

PPTP is generally listed as a less secure protocol, or an outdated VPN. This is true, and it is not. Since the first PPTP VPNs, many of the security loopholes with PPTP and it's PPP encryption have been fixed. It still can't say that it's as secure as other types of VPNs, but it certainly is better than nothing. Either way, those who use PPTP are probably not interested in security. They are interested in entertainment. Because of the type of encryption PPTP uses, it's not as cumbersome as other VPNs, giving you full bandwidth potential.

Though I generally think in terms of Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming TV sites because I'm an American living outside of the USA, there are many types of blocked internet sites around the world. Other obvious examples would be BBC iPlayer in The UK and Europe, but there's tons of other country specific streaming sites. Websites blocked by IP address are not limited to streaming. Facebook and Twitter are blocked in quite a few countries, and may be blocked in more (at least partially) in the future. Of course news and blogs are blocked in countries like China and the Middle East. Changing your IP address through a VPN for Android would unblock these sites. PPTP VPN for Android works great because it's fast, light weight, and easy to install.

L2TP VPN for Android

Though there are potentially other types of VPN for Android, they typically involve 'rooting' your Android phone, and if you don't know how to do this, you risk voiding your warranty and losing data, among other things.

The advantage of L2TP VPN for Android is that it offers better encryption than PPTP. This would be good for Android users looking for privacy. Maybe you need to make a phone call from a secure location (you can do this with VoIP + VPN). Do you want to transfer data on an unsecured network and don't want any potential eavesdroppers to intercept it? Perhaps general security while connecting to public wifi is your goal. These are all good reasons to expect nothing but the best data encryption while connected to the VPN. L2TP will most likely be paired with IPSec encryption, an upgrade from PPP used with PPTP.

Setup of the L2TP can be a bit more involved. Though your Android phone and Tablet will come with a VPN 'client' for L2TP (meaning it can use this type of VPN), setup will vary from service to service. some have created simple, one-click systems, while others require that you follow a list of instructions to get properly connected. Whichever style of VPN for Android you choose, they will probably cost the same amount, and you may even be able to switch later of if you find that it's not performing as you expected. Many VPN services now offer 'one package' deals where you pay one price and get access to all styles of VPNs and all network servers with unlimited bandwidth and free server switching.
