There were plenty of handsets released at this year’s MWC event in Barcelona this year, but two really stole the show, those being the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Sony Xperia Z2.
But which one is the better handset? Can you even split them apart? Which one will sell the higher numbers? Let’s take a look!
Sony Xperia Z2
We thought it was crazy when Sony mentioned releasing the Z2 at MWC this February, simply because the Z1 was released less than six months beforehand, and the Z1 Compact had only been revealed a month before at the CES in Las Vegas.
But low and behold, Sony revealed the brand new handset as promised, and we couldn’t be happier.
The edges, which were a personal bug-bear of ours have been smoothed down, and the already brilliant 20.7 megapixel camera has seen a tonne of new features added.
We’ve seen an improvement under the hood as well, with the Z1’s RAM growing from 2GB up to 3GB in the Z2, as well as seeing the Snapdragon chipset go up from the 800 to the 801 instalment.
The waterproof and dustproof rating sticks around, and the brand new Android 4.4.2 system makes an appearance out of the box.
But it’s the camera features which really do set the Z2 apart from other smartphones on the market right now, with the ability to film in slow-motion, create background defocus and plenty of other effects, all without using a confusing photo editing program.
Samsung Galaxy S5
This was the handset everyone wanted to see at MWC this year, and it didn’t disappoint after being revealed at a glitzy and glamorous event held by the South Korean company.
The design was never really going to be a huge issue considering Samsung’s track record with its design, and although many expected a metallic body, we were instead shown a perforated backing style, which looks just as good in our opinion.
Samsung didn’t stop there though, introducing the fingerprint scanner we all knew was going to make an appearance, along with a fancy heart rate sensor on the back of the phone.
Under the hood we don’t see any compromises either with a 2GB RAM and Snapdragon 801 chipset making their way onto the flagship handset.
In terms of the camera, we see an improved 16 megapixel snapper make its way onto the Galaxy S5, which is more than capable of grabbing pictures at a superb quality.
Add this to the ability to link the handset with the Samsung Galaxy Gear smart watches which are making their way onto the mobile market, and you have a smartphone which really does keep you up to date, all the time.
But Which is Better…?
Right off the bat, you can tell that both the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Sony Xperia Z2 are both phenomenal smartphones that are right at the peak of intelligent design right now.
But to pick a clear winner from MWC is definitely tricky, if you had to choose the better camera, you’d probably go for the Z2, but for general use, maybe the S5.
