Secure Browsing for Android

Browsing the internet from a smartphone is something you do on the go. You connect to the internet while you're at the airport, or when you're abroad and can't access your network. You connect in your local wireless cafe, or at a random place around town where you can get an internet connection. That's normal. But how can you browse safely on your Android? Yeah, you've heard of 'Firesheep, the password stealing Firefox addon. Secure browsing for Android phones and tablets is not just for the paranoid, its for average Android users who are about their privacy and security while using shared networks.

Virtual private networks

This type of software is used around the world by a wide variety of people. Virtual private networks are not only for people looking for privacy on the internet. The IP changing features of VPN are also commonly used by people that want to gain access to foreign websites that have blocked non-local IP address. Netizens of China and Iran (and many others) use VPNs to bypass internet censorship and avoid the strict laws of their countries. Military personnel and businesses use these connections to secure their private data from competitors and malicious individuals.

For us, it's just a way to hide our IP while connected to shared networks. Your IP is the doorway to your personal data, and when you share a doorway with someone, it's super easy to gain access - duh! As I mentioned earlier, getting access to someone's passwords is as easy as downloading a packet sniffer form the internet and monitoring all traffic over the network you're connected to. When someone signs in, the packet is caught and analyzed. Scary huh?

Hiding the IP address of your Android phone or tablet essentially removes your identity from the network, no longer making you a potential target. In addition to hiding your IP, it also encrypts your data, meaning you get protected from less passive eavesdropping techniques like hacking!

For Android OS, regardless of the version, L2TP/IPSec is recommended. Though PPTP is compatible, it's less secure regarding both it's type of VPN tunneling and it's encryption. L2TP/IPSec for Android is available at most VPN services, so you shouldn't have a hard time finding it. Other things to consider before purchasing a VPN subscription would be server location and amount of time you want to sign up for. Discounts are usually offered for 1 year subscriptions. For a year for secure browsing on Android, you can expect to pay somewhere between $5 and $15 dollars.

More expensive services usually own their own network, while cheaper ones will outsource their servers to VPN networks that white label their servers. Outsourcing servers is the standard, so it's not a big deal, but for those that are more particular about the privacy of their VPN connection, you should seek out 'in-house' maintained and operated VPN networks which are few and far between.
