A Guide In Choosing A Laptop for A Mobile Professional

Mobile professionals work and travel a lot. Choosing a laptop for one requires careful thinking. Considerations have to be made for a mobile professional’s specific computing needs. Since they are always on the go, high mobility laptops are in order.

To find that perfect fit, we must determine the kind of work that the laptop is going to be used for. Will the work only mean a lot of word processing or report-making? Or will the laptop need to support software for graphics design, CAD, accounting, etc.? Or, will the laptop only be used for basic word processing and a lot of video conferencing? Questions like these have to be asked in order to point out the factors that would bear weight in choosing a laptop.

Once the purpose of the laptop and work it is expected to support has been defined, we have 5 criteria to keep in mind in choosing a laptop for a mobile professional:

Portability. Since a mobile professional is a frequent traveler portability is a huge factor to consider. Lightweight laptops weighing less than the industry average laptop weight of 5 lbs are on top of the list. We want to get our work done and still be able to travel light.

Connectivity options. What’s the point of carrying a laptop around if you cannot go online? That’s where connectivity comes into play. Both wired and wireless adapters are important. Though most hotels and inns have Wifi available, sometimes the signal is not strong enough to give you a decent speed to get work done. In this case, the Ethernet adapter becomes our friend, especially if you need to do a little connectivity troubleshooting or require fast download speeds. Other adapters or connections to look for new laptops are: card readers, Bluetooth, firewire, eSATA, VGA, and HDMI. These connections will allow you to connect external storage devices like USB drives, memory cards and also peripherals like printers and scanners.

Battery life. Of course, with today’s electronic devices, portability means having a reliable battery. This is a tricky part to choose since more battery power can mean an addition to the laptop’s actual weight. Most laptops now can run on battery for about 4 hours. More advance batteries can let you work for 7 hours tops.

Security. When traveling, security is a must because loss and theft are common. Make sure to get the security features that protect data and personal information saved on the laptop. It is also important to get the ones equipped with Computrace, LoJack or GadgetTrak.

Durability. Even laptops of the most careful people can get a bump or scratch here and there. Laptops of mobile professionals are at higher risk to these little accidents. Laptop manufacturers have models specifically designed to withstand bumps or even falls. Look for these models and also request for hard drives with Free Fall Sensors.

With these criteria in mind, it should be easier to narrow down the laptop choices available on the market and get a laptop that would work best for a mobile professional like you.

sounds to me like you have definitely been there and done that Jonie. Will computer manufacturers ever tell us the truth about battery life? The workstation laptop prices have actually come down from what they used to be a few years ago. They're still high but not ridiculously high.
