Kindle Fire Or Apple Ipad - Who Will Win Your Heart?

Amazon is about to officially enter the tablet market with the launch of Kindle Fire, this holiday season.  This may prove to be the biggest competition yet for iPad, and very well may be the biggest techno launch since the iPhone was released several years back.

First the price...

Amazon is completely undercutting the market, launch a tablet computer for $200.  In a beaten down economy, this is a very strategic move...in fact, Amazon is taking a small loss on each unit with the underlying knowledge that the user activity and purchase through the Amazon Fire will lead to healthy earnings.

At over $700, the iPad is going to have to either cut its price, or it is going to have to really compete by adding a heap of new technology.  I for one am no longer partisan to Apple products.  After using the iPhone for many years and purchasing every single iPhone, including the iPhone 4, I have officially made the switch to a Samsung Nexus, which is Android driven.

The Apple lust has evaporated...for me anyways. How do the Amazon Kindle Fire's specs match up to that of iPads?

Amazon has a vast array of movies and books, in fact the largest database out there.  Amazon offers 100,000 movies and TV shows as well as 950,000 books through their streaming Cloud service.  This will also include a Cloud Drive to store all of your music, applications and reading material along with the Cloud Player, which will allow you to stream music.

Although it runs on Android, it is not an Android tablet...it just leverages the technology.   They utilize their own Amazon Silk browser, which has gotten great reviews thus far. The display can show 16 million colors, implementing Gorilla Glass technology for extra protection.  WIthin the unit, the Amazon Fire runs off of TI's dual-core OMAP processor, which is based on the ARM processor design.

But, is it a full fledged tablet?

Well, not quite.  The Kindle Fire is coined as more of a media consumption tool...a tablet to be used for reading, watching and listening.  Although it does have browsing capabilities (which by the way will track every single web page you visit within their own private network...big brother?), it does not have 3g capabilities.

It also does not have a camera or a microphone, so you are not going to be using Skype or video chat from the tablet.  It is a hacked down tablet with enormous media capabilities.  An invincible music, video, TV, and book machine with a sidekick browser as an extra.  If this is all you are using your iPad for now or if you were planning on buying an iPad simply for these reasons, I would suggest you jump on pre-ordering the Kindle Fire.  It will be a smarter purchasing decision.

Are Amazon's profits going to skyrocket? Well this is to be debated.  Amazon is taking a small loss on each tablet, but they are going to sell a load of Applications (via the Amazon Android App Store), books, videos, and TV shows.  It is also going to add additional brand power to the company as many people are going to purchase the Fire, then buy the next Fire, then shop more through Amazon's website, and then perhaps buy other Amazon products that come in the future. If you are investing in stocks, you may want to have a peak.

I personally think I am going to buy a Kindle Fire, not because I need one and not necessarily because I want one.  Maybe I am just a technology freak that has to have the latest toy that hits the market, and maybe I like to read books (and have access to the largest database out there).  The Kindle Fire will be released on November 15th, 2011...but they are taking pre-orders now.

Are you in the market for a Fire?

I would have to say I love my iPad, but wish it acted more like a lap top for the price. I haven't used a kindle, but I hear they are nice. iPads are great for getting almost anything done on and offline. But for those people who like to read and just use simple apps and games, I hear the kindle is the way to go. It's all a matter of opinion.

I have a Kindle Fire 3rd Generation, which I got at a discount, because I am poor. I absolutely love it, and so does my 5-year-old grandson, who can use it to play the games on the apps, which shows you just how easy it is to use. It has tons of 'em, and I think it is very close to being an iPad, because you can access the internet, it has apps for just about everything you can think of. Some Android apps work, and some don't, however. The best part is the books, however. I have 1420, only 1415 I paid over $2.00 for. I also downloaded 'Calibre' a free book management program which is indispensable for the serious bibliophile, I do believe. Not only does it help you locate all kinds of sources for books, but it makes formatting them ieasy and uploading them to and from Kindle as simple as clicking your mouse.

Thank you for pointing out that the Kindle Fire is not a full fledged tablet, so you can't really compare it to the iPad. It is basically a souped up E-reader. But, in the "Price" section of your article you mention "At over $700, the iPad..." which is not entirely false but is mostly misleading. Brand new, the current generation iPad starts at $499 and you can get a refurbished one as low as $419.

Yeah, that is true. I was referencing the iPad I bought, the 36GB, 3G. Yes, there are cheaper options and yes, I believe that the iPad is a better choice if you want a computer versus an amplified e-reader. I am sure my opinions will continue to change on this as time goes on. And I think Apple is coming out with and Ipad Mini in the new year...will be interesting to see what the price point is with that.

You mean 32GB?... And the iPad mini is the dumbest Apple RUMOR I have heard in a long time. Apple will not come out with two iPad sizes, ever. They put so much research and development into form factor to make sure things feel good in the users hands. They will also never come out with a larger or smaller iPhone for the same reason, form factor.

I wouldn't put anything past Apple now...they have nobody there to say "this is S&*%". An iPad mini, although I think may be a stretch, could be a possibility if they find a market for it. If they can have a price point of the Kindle Fire and steal their market share away from them, it would be a consideration. Think of all the different ipod sizes..the tablet market is very segmented and there are different types of tablet users.

I just saw the Jeff Bezo's launch the other day and it was very Steve Job'esque. I think that Jeff Bezos is another one of those innovative geniuses in his own right, but within the online purchasing, store, and review model. Amazon may see an explosion in earnings (and stock price) in 2012...just a quiet prediction.
