Mobile Computing And Your World :set To Change Forever But Are You Set?

Are you still in that frame of mind where you are not able to decide whether to go ahead with the purchase of a device running on Windows 8 or to stay loyal to your irrepressively cute laptop even though it doesn't have a touch screen, or whether to go ahead with the purchase of an Android device ,maybe a tablet instead? Or maybe you prefer a TabTop, running on a quad-core processor? Whatever it is, it's time to tap ever so gently on your shoulder, my friend, and to alert you to the fact that whatever hardware components or system requirements you may be planning to invest in, whether for your home office or for your organization, it's time you took a second, and maybe a third look at what you are planning to buy and use in the coming few years and months ahead, as the world of mobile computing is about to undergo a massive change which is going to change everything we know about computing itself.

In this and other articles in this series which I am starting here, I am going to alert you about the game changing thing that's coming down the driveway, as far as mobile computing is concerned, that's going to up-end the rules of the game forever and influence everything ,from where you store your information to which stocks you invest in.

I am thinking of you as someone who really understands computing and the ramifications, far-reaching as they will be, which are bound to occur to your life ,or your children's or loved one's life, in the approaching ,in fact, very close future. Therefore, you are someone who'd like to keep abreast of these developments, and not drown under their weight.

Stan Williams, a research scientist at Hewlett-Packard, was quoted in the August 7, 2006 issue of Fortune magazine as saying that, "œThe age of computing has not even begun." However, in the coming three years itself, computing ,or even the amount of data a computing device can handle at any one time is going to hit a roadblock ,the likes of which has never before been encountered before, and because many of us use some form of cloud computing service, or Google Drive, or servers of some other kind physically not part of our actual desktop or PC, how about if a massive snag caused by this very roadblock I am talking about, a part of your documentation, or even your organization's documentation, is irretrievably lost in the process of the system syncing ever more amounts of data, or for that matter, accomodating it? How was Williams ever able to make a statement like the above one?

To understand this conundrum one needs to take a serious look once more at the progression in which our data storage capacity as well as computing capability has developed before going a bit more deeply into how to prepare for this coming paradigm shift in computing and that's what I will be doing in this series. So, watch this space.

Briefly then, by 2015, computing as we know it is going to run into something called "˜Moore's Law' which states that the amount of computing power possible to squeeze into the same space, say the top of a single microchip, doubles every eighteen months. What's going to happen in 2015 is that Moore's Law is going to stop functioning. Which means that the computing power of any computer developed in this world which is made of the present materials, that is, silicon chip, is simply not going to develop any more. This may, in turn, affect data storage capacities across the board. At that stage, do count on a few of your crucial documents getting lost.

The best remedy to encounter this slackening of Moore's Law (or should we call it The Real Doomsday, given how much almost every second aspect of life on our planet has come to depend on our data processing capabillities?) is to be prepared. Are you using energy efficient systems either in your organization or your home today, say those that stress the computing capabillities of the silicon chip in even your domestic devices or employee data storage computers, to get a little less heated up, because it is the excess heating of the integrated circuits in these devices that result in all the resistance that present the roadblock to the proper functioning of Moore's Law.

The trick then, is to focus on ever more energy efficient and streamlined domestic devices, furnishings and even physical components of the very house in which you live. This is what I will be heavily focusing on in the comng articles in this master-series which seeks to probe deep into the computing going on in your very homes and truly go where no one has ever gone before. The result might ,in the very least be that you start buying things and making your home in such a way that you save a fair amount of money and don't encounter blackouts in your systems and your devices a few years down the line.

Street Talk

Thanks Geoffrey. The fact is, our internet bandwidth, cell phone bandwidth AND data processing capabillities are together going to hit a wall higher than the Blue Wall in the next 22 months. In this series ,my effort will be to bring out of the woodwork all the fantastic research and technology being developed this kind of situation, which is going to be like the first major extinction of the information age...I will be more forthcoming in the future articles in this series on this topic, and more importantly, what technologies are being developed to counter this kind of situation. Have a nice and great day.
