Nexus 7 is of course the newest release from Google, and because Netflix is still King of the Castle when it comes to On Demand Streaming services, it's only natural that the Netflix app was voted one of the best apps for Nexus 7. However, Netflix is actually unavailable in most countries, and for those few countries that do have a local version of Netflix, it's slightly different that the US version. There are fewer movies, fewer new releases, and language settings & dubbing may present a problem for travelers. Point-in-case: How do you get the American version of Netflix outside the USA on Nexus 7?
It's actually pretty easy, and if you live outside the US, you may have done this before. If you've set up a VPN on another Android device before, you'll also find the following few paragraphs very familiar.
The key we're looking for here is called a VPN.
VPNs are actually used for a lot of cool stuff, but it's a very long discussion, and I don't want to bore you with them. The only point you need to understand is that the VPN changes our IP address. It actually creates a virtual tunnel that allows us to connect to a private network in the USA, and gives us a US IP address, regardless of which country we're currently in.
That means I could be in Brazil, Russia, South Africa, or Japan, but still make Netflix think that I'm in the USA!
And though not all mobile devices allow for VPN connections, Google's Nexus 7 does, and it's pretty easy to set up. But we're not there yet.
First, you need to sign up for a VPN service. (where did you think that VPN server in the USA would come from?).
Once you've found a VPN service that you like, for a price you can afford, and a length of time you'd like to subscribe to the service, you need to sign into a VPN server in the USA. Yes, that is a requirement. Most VPN services will offer a US IP package by default, but be sure to check, because some are British or European oriented, and you may need to request a US VPN package. Most places will make this obvious before you check out because VPN location is one of the main things to consider when choosing a VPN service.
The other thing to consider is the type of VPN connection that you'll use. For mobile devices, you can basically choose PPTP, L2TP, or IPSec. PPTP will probably be what you want to start with, as it'll provided you with faster connection and an easier setup in most cases (though the software does differ from service to service). The other ones are offered for users that are looking for more (or a different type of) encryption. Like I said before, VPNs have lots of uses, but for streaming Netflix, I think PPTP will be your best choice.
The VPN service you've chosen will then give you the login credentials for the US VPN server you've chosen, and you sign in. You now have a US IP address, and you can stream Netflix as normal.
If you've not signed up for Netflix already, this is also possible, even when outside the USA. There are multiple routes for monthly payments, and not having a physical US address shouldn't be a problem.
