New Kindle Fire Vs Nook Tablet

Barnes & Noble insists that their new Nook Tablet is a superior to the new Amazon Kindle Fire and of course worth the extra $50 retail. Amazon introduced the Kindle Fire with a rock bottom price point at $199.00.

With that affordable price, I believe Amazon is attempting to put a tablet in the hands of everyone much like Henry Ford and Volkswagen attempted to put affordable automobiles into the hands of as many people as possible. Of course, with that price point, the Fire does not have the power, connectivity and options of Apple's iPad. Barnes and Noble introduced their new Nook with the intention of sitting in the gap between the Fire and other higher end tablets.

Size and Form Factor

Both the Fire and Nook are 7 inch tablets and the Nook is 5 ounces lighter than the Fire at 14.1 ounces. The Nook has a larger bezel around the screen for easier handling, but the Fire has a smaller overall format and a cleaner, streamlined look.

Storage

The Nook has double the storage of the Fire at 16 GB and an additional 32 can be added through the use of and SD card . The Fire has only 8 GB, but Amazon is pushing their tablet to be more of a cloud device by offering storage on their huge cloud network.

Display

The screens on both units have the same 1024X600 pixel resolution and as such, they are very similar. However, the Nook screen does appear slightly brighter and crisper.

Battery Life

Specifications on the battery life claim 11.5 hours of reading on the Nook and 8 hours on the Fire. The Nook comes with a power adapter to charge it, but has no other options for charging. The Fire, on the other hand, can be charged with the ac adapter or by a generic micro USB cable.

Apps

When it comes to Apps, it looks like both tablets will have comparable options. However, the Fire will come with a new web browser called Silk. Silk may be the single most exciting element of the new Kindle Fire. Silk is a sort of a dual browser. Most of the processing work is done while surfing the internet is leveraged to Amazons huge cloud network of servers which will in turn free up the processors on the Fire.

Conclusion

Due to the low price point, both are very basic in their options with no 3G, cameras or Bluetooth. In many ways, it seems that the Nook has better overall specifications, but it is $50 more than the new Kindle Fire. The real wild card in the comparison between the two tablets will be the performance of the Fire's Silk browser and the reliance on Amazon's cloud storage. Additionally, it is difficult to beat the Fire's $199.97 price point.
