Samsung Galaxy S Iii Vs Ativ S: Android Vs Windows 8 Phone

Samsung ATIV S has been recently launched at the IFA 2012. It is the first Windows based smartphone from Samsung. The Korean tech giant has achieved immense success over its Android line of products in the last couple of years. Of late, Samsung is going through quandary after being sued by Apple over patent infringement, a litigation that ended in favor of Apple, exhaustively. Nevertheless, Samsung has chosen to expand its domain by launching smartphones and tablets on the Windows 8 platform.

The Galaxy S3 is another Samsung product which became an instant hit! At present, it is the only Samsung smartphone to run on Android 4.0. The ATIV S draws some aesthetic inspiration from Galaxy S3. Windows 8 is currently the most talked about OS in the market and thus, the ATIV S is expected to do well in the months to come. You will find a brief comparison of some of the revealed features of the ATIV against the Galaxy S3 as follows:

Display and User Interface

The ATIV S is equipped with a 4.8 inch Super AMOLED high definition display similar to the S3. It is further enhanced with Corning Gorilla Glass 2 technology to resist scratches better. Windows Phone 8 retains the tile based interface of its predecessor which looks sophisticated on the ATIV S.

The Galaxy S3 has a screen resolution of 720x1280 and comes with the native TouchWiz interface for Android. To prevent scratches, this phone also has Gorilla Glass 2 technology from Corning.

Processor, RAM and GPU

The capability of Windows Phone 8 to support quad core processor has allowed Samsung to allot a dual core i5 processor to the ATIV S. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S3 runs on Samsung’s Exynos 4412 Quad 1.4GHz Cortex-A9 processor. There is 1GB of memory on both the smartphones. Currently, the Galaxy S3 is a step ahead having been equipped with a Mali-400MP GPU as the GPU of ATIV S is still not known.

Operating System and Storage

The ATIV S runs on Windows Phone 8, the latest smartphone operating system from Microsoft. It was recently showcased by Microsoft. On the other hand, Galaxy S3 has introduced Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the market. It is also being stated that a Jelly Bean update would soon feature on the Galaxy S3.

For storage, both the devices are available in dual variants of 16 GB and 32 GB respectively. Users can go for further expansion using the microSD slots that are available on both ATIV S and Galaxy S3.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is loaded with a 2100 mAh Li-Ion battery. The company promises a stand-by time of 790 hours and a talktime of more than 11 hours on HSPA network. The ATIV S comes with a more powerful 2300 mAh battery and the performance is expected to be at par with the Galaxy S3, if not better. The battery life of ATIV S will largely depend on the battery consumption of Windows Phone 8.

Price and availability

As of now, there is no hint on the price of the Samsung ATIV S. Meanwhile, Galaxy S3 has hit the market for quite some time now and has been popular among all. All the big U.S. mobile service providers offer Galaxy S3 at a good price.

The ATIV S, as discussed earlier, is the debut Windows 8 smartphone from Samsung. There is no uncertainty that the industry is about to witness a tough fight between the ATIV and Galaxy series of smartphones. Windows Phone was among the rare options for mobile OS till date. However, Microsoft has made lots of development on its forthcoming multi-platform operating system. While Android has carved out its own space in the market, it’s time to witness how Windows 8 fares in its debut venture into the mobile industry.
