Tablet Vs Laptop: Who will survive?

The era of the tablet is upon us and the era of the laptop as king of mobile computing seems to be approaching its twilight. This is shaping up to be a similar battle as the dvd vs vhs or cds vs audio cassettes. In today's ever changing technological landscape, there can only be room for one.Laptops have enjoyed a strangle hold on the mobile computing market for well over a decade and seemed they would be around for atleast another decade until the tablet stepped in with its cool features and ease of use. Apple's I pad took the market by storm and since then many manufacturers have rolled out their own versions of the tablet pc such Motorolla's zoom, Google's Nexus, Samsung's galaxy tab and Acer's iconia to name a few.

Portability

In terms of Portability and mobility tablets stack up well vs laptops as they are practically less than half the size of laptops with them just being a screen. They are more sleek than a laptop and travel more easily on flights. There is just something Star Trekesque about a tablet pc as they are just that much easier to handle and walk around with. The typical laptop (opened) is about a foot and a half and more in lenghth and about a foot wide and an inch thick. Tablets Pcs like the Ipad are about 9 inches long, 7.5 inches wide and 0.5 inches thick. The average laptop weighs about 6-8 lbs while tablets are between 1-1.5 lbs. Tablets are easily winning the portability battle.

Computing Power

Perhaps the laptop's biggest and last remaining true advantage, laptps can carry extreme processing power and storage capabilities along with powerful operating systems. Multi core processors have become the norm for laptops with as many as 7 cores with speeds 2 Ghz and above being common. Tablets however are limited in this area with the average processor speed being around 1Ghz and many are incapapble of complex photo and video editing. Storage wise laptops commonly carry 250GB plus hard drives while maximum storage for tablets is currently in the 64Gb range. Laptops currently have more developed operatinng systems based largely in part to advances on the desktop front with windows and mac operating sytsems being standard bearers. Android and Apple's iOS are some ways behind their laptop counterparts but with the ever changing technological landscape it wont be long for new advances to bring these neck and neck. Laptops have the edge here but not for long.

Ease of Use andCost

Tablets are ultra user friendly with the use of touchscreens and not much need for many other peripherals. It may take a little getting used to at first to features such as the size of the onscreen keyboard but with a little practice these become quite manageable. Laptops use similsar components as desktops but in a more compressed package and most users are familar with the peripherals and have lttle trouble with them. The peripherals such as the touchpad can become ineffective from time to time as well as with keyboards etc. A tablets main concern is mainting the touchscreen. With the emergence of tablets the prices of laptops has been coming down with much regularity almost like a clearance sale to make way for the ever more popular tablet. A standard laptop can be bought for under $500 with decent features and this is about the cost of a high end tablet pc. Both are even in terms of affordability at the moment.

At the moment the battle is almost even but the tablet is gaining ground day by day. This does not mean it is time to completely rid yourself of your laptop and its headaches but in say another 3 years the tablet will have a distinct advantage and hence claim the spoils of the war.

Street Talk

The new laptops like the DELL XPS 13 ultrabook are very compact. 2.9 lbs and very thin. The computer manufacturers will make whatever we will buy. Samsung is making Laptops now. Apple will be releasing TVs soon. I'm looking forward to see what the industrial designers come up with for the Apple TV. What will it be called? An Orange? Your article was very interesting reading for me. Thanks Dwayne.

Lol @ orange. I think the phone company by the name of orange would have a problem with that. You raised a good point with the dell XPS13 though; this shows that the lines between tablet and laptop are becoming blurred. Maybe a hybrid will be the ultimate victor. Thanks for stopping by Clark!
