The Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) kicked off with Apple’s launching of the two most sought after operating systems for its tablet and desktops/laptops – the iOS 6 and Mac OS X Mountain Lion. On 11th June the two major operating systems were unveiled by Apple CEO Tim Cook. The MacBooks too received were refurbished with hardware and other minor changes like addition of Retina Display. As always, Apple was able to completely enthrall users with their new launches.
What does Apple offer through iOS 6 and OS X Mountain Lion? Here’s a quick look into the features and specs of the two new operating systems.
Features for iOS 6
The iOS six has been loaded with more than 200 new features. It’s got an upgraded Siri, better app for Maps, built-in Facebook app, Shared Photo streams and a brand new app for Passbook. To add further, there is Guided Access for academics. The Siri has been improved a lot. It can now recognize more languages than its predecessor, provides a list of movie releases and also offers sports related information like scores and timings in bits and pieces.
The integration of Facebook app will support many other apps like Siri, Safari, notification center and maps. In keeping with its Mountain Lion counterpart, iOS 6 will provide information about your friends in the address book.
The new Passbook app will suffice for archiving all your passes from railways to movie tickets. The Guided Access app will allow guardians and professors to disable hardware specific buttons and feedback mechanisms on an iOS device. The sole motto of this app is to help people with impairment to channelize learning via one particular app.
The feature that apparently received major upgrade is the Map app. Users will now get plenty of new features like turn-by-turn navigation, traffic information gathered from roads as well as three dimensional views. Users may not be able to gauge the added advantage of these features until any product with iOS 6 is launched. However, the three dimensional view is reportedly a noteworthy feature.
The Safari Browser on iOS 6 has been also revamped with iCloud tabs, compatibility with FaceTime, and a VIP mailbox for e-mails. The new Safari is also capable of rejecting unsolicited calls and will also provide genuine callers with a message.
Features for OS X Mountain Lion
The Mac OS X Mountain Lion is inspired by the iOS in many aspects. At WWDC, Apple demonstrated lot of new applications and functionalities in Mountain Lion like the app for new messages, notification center, tasks, notes and GameCenter. Online data backup through iCloud is a major highlight for Mountain Lion. The iCloud syncs all the apps from all your Apple devices. You can now share URLs, photos, videos, and notes via widely popular social networking and video streaming sites like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube and Vimeo.
The notification center on Facebook app makes social networking much easier and delightful. Supporting both the Facebook and Twitter app, users can do a lot like updating status from the notification center. Like iOS, your friends on Facebook will be auto-added to the Mountain Lion contacts list. Evidently, Facebook, the most popular social networking site has been redefined into an app with added functionality.
Another interesting feature on Mountain Lion is the Gatekeeper. It monitors all downloads and also acts as a filter against unsafe files. The OS also got a new Safari with a tab for ‘Smart Search Field’ which makes for a better web search. Other features consist of AirPlay Mirroring and Baidu search specifically for Chinese clients.
In the two hour event at WWDC, Apple revealed that users can download OS X Mountain Lion July onwards from Mac App Store. It will be priced at $20. No doubt, the products will add another feather to Apple’s cap.
