Mother\'s Day, Mothers\' Day Or Mothers Day – What Are We Actually Celebrating?

Mother's day singular possessive, Mothers' day plural possessive or Mothers day plural non-possessive, what or which are we actually celebrating? The day reputed to date back to ancient times and celebrations, the Roman festival of “Hilaria” a Greek festival and there's also a Christian celebration.

However today's celebration's reputed to have its origins in America where a women, Julia Howe proclaimed a day in 1870. The modern-day date, associated with Anna Jarvis who held a memorial to her mother is 1908. She then started a campaign to have the date proclaimed and this declared in 1914, and by 1920 she regretted the move, as business had already commercialised the day.

The original title for the day was “Mother's day” a singular possessive noun, a celebration to one's Mother of the family, not all mothers of the world but your own. The title often changed to “Mothers' day” a plural possessive noun, and “Mothers day” a plural non-possessive noun, making the day far more commercialised. I can understand that business fell in behind this move as profit the drive and not a celebration.

When I a child, the day was not a day of presents, but a day when Mom got breakfast-in-bed, and spoilt for the rest of the day. Meals prepared by Dad and the children, which had Mother cringing at the mess being created, but it was her day when the children could show their appreciation towards their Mother. I wonder now when I see money spent and presents being bought, if the day has not progressed beyond the original idea. In our house the day is still celebrated as a singular possessive noun, the children spoiling their Mother without a present being given.

The family spread far and wide, and no children nearby, has me spoiling my wife for the day, after all she is the Mother of my children. A phone call to my Mother, a wish for a happy day, the best I can do as she not just around the corner. In some countries, as my own, we have a day dedicated to women, National Women's day, a public holiday, to commemorate the day women marched on parliament, protesting the “pass” laws of the then Government. I wonder when this day will become a commercialised public holiday.

It seems a pity, that days that had a family tradition, are now becoming a day where money's spent on buying a gift, and not celebrating their mothers. I'm sure the older generation will have their own memories of how the days spent, and have hopefully passed the traditions down to their own, now older children.

A day to celebrate, Mother's (singular possessive) day, Happy Mother's Day Mom's, may your children spoil and show their love for you.

I wanted nothing of the commercialized mother's day this year. I gave specific instructions to the hubby that since the kids are now old enough to make me cards and their schools were kind enough to have them make me presents that I wanted nothing store bought this year. My desire - a picnic lunch at a park with my family. I didn't care which park, so we left that decision to my mother in law and we had a fabulous celebration - 3 generations spending time together on a beautiful spring day.

And AJ thats how it should be, a period where Mom enjoys herself and the kids and Dad get to spoil her and show their appreciation for what she does for them, I hope you enjoyed your day but did not forget to water the veggie garden.....

My 12 yo grandson produced a video featuring him, his sister and brother in which they thanked their Mom for all she does for them and expressed their love for her. It was not professional but sure meant a lot to her.

Damn John that is something that cannot be bought, who cares about the quality, the thought of this will stay in her mind for ever. What a sweet thing to do, sure are special grand children. My daughters 6 and 3 year olds made their mother breakfast in bed, you should have seen the kitchen, but what did it matter the thought was there and that makes the effort special.

Yes Shawn, I wonder that myself, I asked the kids if ever they had called me that whist still young, They would not admit it, my son however ask why I wanted to know, so I could claim a day off with the wife, my answer.

The part where you wrote, "Mother cringing at the mess being created," made me chuckle. I can see myself doing that, tidy mama that I am . . . all the while trying to appreciate the gift.

Its one day a year, who cares what the kitchen looks like but the joy and achievement that the children get from doing for Mom for one day what she does for them every day is what Mother's day is all about, The child wants to show an appreciation, leave the mess till tomorrow.

Nothing spoils Mum like brekkie in bed. And handmade crafts from her children. If sons and daughters wish to spend money, may they just not lose sight of the original meaning. Good to draw attention to this special day. I spent the day having brunch with my Mum and sisters on the balcony of her home with bubbles, chocolate and antipasto! Yum

All to their own Carmen I just feel watching what some mother's are getting just seem so wrong, enjoy the day with the family and let them spoil you. Mothers are special people, far more so than Fathers, and that I feel should be shown by love not presents.

As long as you treat your Mom well that's all that matters. When you have your own it will be your turn.
