New Mother Advice

If you are looking for some new mother advice, because you have just had a baby then congratulations!

One thing you will find (as most of us do) is that everyone has advice for new mothers and while it is all well meaning, most of it is unsolicited and unhelpful. The best new mother advice I got came from my mother-in-law and she told me that mothers instinctively know about what is needed for their child and to follow that instinct no matter what anyone else tells you, especially when it comes to the child's health. The other piece of new mother advice I received is that when people give you advice, just smile and thank them and then do what you know is right and often it will involve ignoring unsolicited information.

A classic piece of new mother advice is to sleep when the baby sleeps, even in the daytime. I found this easier said than done because clothes still have to be washed and meals need to be prepared, but it is still important to get as much sleep as you can and get as much practical help as you can. Lowering your expectations of what you can get done, might be hard, but it is helpful for you in the long term.

Many people will have very strong opinions about breastfeeding and will be aggressive in stating these opinions to new mothers. My advice would be to have a good health care professional that knows the needs of the baby and of yourself that can guide your decision making and you can ignore most of what is said on the topic by other people.

Speaking of breast feeding, it is a common thought that breast feeding will help a woman loose and unwanted weight gained during pregnancy. My new mother advice is that this happens for some women and for others it doesn't make a scrap of difference to what the scales say. This brings me to another point, I don't think that a new mother should be concerned about fitting into those pre-pregnancy jeans - there is enough going on and enough to adjust to without the pressure of losing any baby weight.

Obviously we all want to give our very best to our beloved children and want to be the very best mothers we can be. In order to be at our best, we need to be healthy and to take time out to do something for ourselves and do it without feeling guilty about it. Again, this is easier said than done but we do need to make sure we have a little time out from our children. I personally enjoy doing the grocery shopping without my sons in tow.

Please be aware that the new mother advice I'm presenting in this article, is from another mother and not a health care professional, but I think that most health care professionals would not disagree with anything written here.

Congratulations again and take care of your own needs as well as taking care of your child's needs. Good luck.
