7 Tips For Finding the Right Motivator

However motivated you are and whatever goals you have set, there are times when it can be difficult to keep on track. This may be because some of the tasks you have to complete in order to fulfil your goals can be things that you actually don’t want to do. The important thing is to recognise when this happens and rather than sabotage your success have an idea of different motivators that you can use to give you a kick start or stop you giving up to suit you and your circumstances.

The thing about choosing a motivator is that it should be something that works for you and is appropriate to the context. Motivators don't have to be huge things or cost any money. I like to use a step on a regular basis to keep fit. However, there are times when I really find it difficult to get started. So what do I use as a motivator? I put on my favourite episodes of the West Wing or 24 and tell myself I’ll just step for 10 minutes. I quickly forget the time as I get absorbed in the episode and find myself stepping for at least an hour. It’s simple and it works for me.

If you find yourself struggling to stay motivated why not consider some of the motivators listed below and adapt them to your circumstances. Remember, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks, it's just got to feel right for you.

1. Consider giving up: Yes this really is an option. Think through what will happen if you decide not to complete a task. How will it affect your long term goal. Will it stop you achieving something you really want? How will you feel if you don’t achieve your goal? Sometimes just thinking about the consequences of not completing a task that you have struggled with is enough to get you motivated.

2. Break things into bite-sized chunks: If you’ve decided that you’re going to continue to work towards your goal but you still get stuck and find it difficult to remain motivated, then break task down into bite-sized pieces. It’s hardly revolutionary, but it can really help to make unpleasant or boring tasks far more manageable, and lead them to being completed more quickly.

3. Use the 5 minute more rule: I love to use the 5 minute more rule to get motivated. If you have something you really don’t want to do, make a contract with yourself to do it just for 5 minutes. At the end of the five minutes you can stop or you can decide to do 5 minutes more. As you see yourself making progress it’s often easy to do another 5 minutes, until you forget about the time and see yourself making real progress.

4. Work with a goal buddy: Sometimes working with a ‘goal buddy’ towards a shared goal can help you remain on track even when you feel you're flagging. It can really help to have someone who can do something alongside you like jogging or dancing and be encouraging. It doesn’t work for everyone, but you can use a goal buddy in all sorts of contexts. A word of warning - you need to be careful to chose a goal buddy who will be genuinely supportive.

5. Swap talents with someone else: If you're struggling to stay motivated on a task consider whether you have to complete it, or whether it could be completed by someone else. If it could be why not – do a swap with someone else? I know people who regularly do tasks for each other by bartering. It doesn’t matter whether you barter or pay – but having someone do something that you’re struggling with or is holding you up is often a better solution.

6. Think outside the box: If you find yourself struggling with motivation, try and think outside the box. Could you do something differently? Don’t limit your thoughts. You may be surprised by what you come up with.

7. Reward yourself: Rewards come in different shapes and forms. It can be really good to plan rewards in as you work towards a long term goal at various intervals. Try and ensure that whatever reward you choose it matches your achievements. If you over reward yourself, you’ll find that it has the opposite effect from what you’re expecting and will contribute to you being demotivated rather than motivated.

Summary If you want to achieve your goals, it’s important that you have strategies for staying motivated. There are lots of different motivators that you can choose to ensure that you stay on track – find the ones that work for you.
