Fun, Free Ways To Entertain Yourself When Youre Alone

Picture yourself FINALLY having a day off of work or school, with the house to yourself. You think, 'YESS, NOW I can do whatEVER I want!", only to find yourself sitting on the couch in a creative slump, unsure of what to actually DO. You would more than likely decide to ask your friends to go out to eat, go shopping, or go to the bar. Well, I'm here today to tell you a few ways that I keep myself, an unemployed 19 year old girl living on a farm with three roommates that are gone all the time, entertained FOR FREE while they work ten hour days.

1. Blogging - I just recently discovered the wonders of blogging and writing online, and I always have had somewhat of an expressive side to my writing. Writing is a good outlet for boredom, because when you're bored, you can write whatever you want to, which is called 'stream-of-conscience' writing. It can be the most EPIC STORY EVER TOLD, or as simple as "bored bored bored bored bored obred woops theres a typo but oh well. bored bored bored etc. etc.". It's very entertaining, and a couple good free websites are http://www.xanga.com/ and http://www.blogger.com/ so check those out.

2. Being Outdoors - One of my favorite things. Be it in the sweltering hot sun catching perch off the side of an aluminum boat, or even in the dead of winter when it's -25 with a -60 windchill. There is so much you can do outside, even if it's mindless labor. Shoveling snow, for instance. It's good exercise and it keeps your driveway clean, and you might just be able to earn some money in the process, if you get a wild hair and want to clean your neighbors' driveway. Also, just staring at the sky. People pay far too little attention to the sky. My favorite time of day is sunset, and I'm always putting sunset pictures on Facebook. Or you could walk the dogs, chase deer, sit on the ground and pull out grass, climb a tree, fall out of a tree, rollerblade at 1 a.m., or just go for a walk.

3. Reading - I have always been an avid reader. I don't know what kind of household doesnt have books in it, but you would be surprised how many really good books are out there, besides the Twilight series. Between you and me, I actually do judge books by the cover, and I really pick some good ones. And if you dont want to read, you could get a few magazines, some erasers, an X-Acto knife, some paper, and some permanent markers, and make your own homemade posters or greeting cards! I do this a lot, and you would be shocked and appalled at some of the things I come up with. SHOCKED AND APPALLED!

4. Cleaning - Believe it or not, once you get into it, it's hard to stop. You can spend 5-6 hours halfheartedly cleaning while your spouse or kids are home, OR wait untl they're gone, crank up the radio, get your singing voice in tune, and get your entire house cleaned in about 3 hours or less, depending on the mess there is to begin with. Make a CD of your favorite upbeat songs, or even a playlist on your computer's media player, and run around the house singing like Aretha with a featherduster. I was a housekeeper at my previous job, and cleaning got done FAST when I was Aretha with a featherduster.

Now that last one, you might feel a little awkward doing at first, but all of these steps are good for mental or physical development. Bookmark this page and refer back to it every so often when you're alone, for I will be adding more and more ways to entertain yourself. The list is endless!

Great list Jamie... I usually grab a book or get some exercise... and do my best to avoid the cleaning. :)
