Why the question mark?
I came across an article while researching hobbies for seniors that really shook me up. There were five suggestions for hobbies for seniors, but not one of them suits me and I am well into my senior years.
GARDENING
Gardening was the first suggestion. I have no quarrel with that. I do not have a green thumb. When I owned a home, I couldn't even get grass to grow.
Don't get me wrong. I love people who garden and have the greatest respect for them. I appreciate the flowers they grow. I welcome the vegetables they give me because they planted a zillion zucchini plants. I'm just not good at it, ergo, I don't enjoy it.
BIRDING
Birding may be your cup of tea. It's not mine. Far be it from me to criticize what you like. It just seems boring to me. Besides, the birds find that I am an easy target.
MODELLING
I came across a site that referred to modelling as SCDD - Senior Citizen Decrepitude Deficiency. Doesn't that seem a little harsh? Modelling takes time and patience and can improve your manual dexterity. Here again, I can find no reason I would care to do it.
FISHING
My father used to refer to fishing as "my idea of nothing to do". I know fisherman who agree with that statement and are proud of it. They say it's the perfect way to relax. However, my father's perfect way to relax was golf. Most fishermen say that golf is not relaxing - if it's done right, it is utterly frustrating.
GENEALOGY
This hobby can spike your intellectual curiosity and find out who in your family is famous or infamous and why. I really don't care much for my living relatives, why should I care about the dead ones?
So now I ask you, why did someone ever author an article that I find completely unacceptable?
If you read my comments on each hobby, you probably thought "what a grouch!" However, I'd like to argue that point with you. I lead a very active senior life and I have plenty of hobbies, it's just that I found this article to be incomplete. There are so many more activities available for seniors, why limit it to five choices - especially ones that don't interest me.
I love music and I not only make it one of my hobbies, but I perform and teach. I still am active in sports and I fine that a good physical workout is a hobby and also beneficial.
So go ahead, tell me I am too critical and grouchy. Being critical and grouchy are two of my favorite hobbies.
