I still remember the first time I surfed the internet back in 2000 and thought about how great it would be to learn how to make a living with this wonderful new technology. It took me quite a while to actually get going because I was terribly lacking when it came to self motivation. If you lack self motivation (which I often still do) you probably realize how frustrating it can be.You know what needs to be done and you know how to do it but you can't seem to find the motivation. There are a few things you may need to learn to overcome such as:
- Fear of failure
- Lack of focus
- Procrastination
Overcoming Fear Of Failure
Fear of failure can be paralyzing. What you need to understand is that failure is a part of the process on your way to becoming successful. Successful people do not avoid failure, they welcome it and learn from it. Taking action is the best way to overcome fear. One of the greatest quotes I have ever heard about failure was; "Failure is the canvas on which you paint your successes." Once you internalize the fact the failure is a stepping stone on your way to success, you will never fear failure it again.
Overcoming Lack Of Focus
It's hard to stay self motivated if you can't remember why you wanted to achieve something in the first place. You need to stay focused on your WHY. Hang pictures of things you want around your work space as a reminder of what you're working for. I find this to be an effective motivator for me. I understand that not everyone is comfortable with wanting material things. If that's the case for you, find something of a visual nature to keep you focused. If you simply want to free yourself of financial burdens without wanting "toys", write yourself a mission statement that you can see at all times in your work area.
Overcoming Procrastination
Procrastination is one of the biggest enemies of productivity and can be a difficult thing to overcome. I suffer from procrastination on a daily basis but I have learned to deal with it and work through it. Overcoming my procrastination goes back to learning to stay focused. Even though many of the things I want to achieve still seem so far away, it is the fear of what I will have to settle for if I don't do something today! Simply put, I have learned to put procrastination off for another day.
Learning how to get self motivated is crucial if you want to relieve yourself from the shackles of employment. If you don't learn to motivate yourself, your boss will do it for you. That is plenty of motivation for me!
Ughhhh...procrastination! I hate that! Just like you, I suffer this the most every single day. I know that I can do things better given more time. I do have all the time. But my problem is I tend to wait for the last minute before doing what I am supposed to do. And I end up with regrets because I didn't do well enough. Thanks for sharing, Steve. I guess we just have to motivate one another here.
