How to Motivate Yourself Every Morning

Getting up in the mornings may be one of most 'painful' moments of your day - especially if it's a Monday! Have you ever heard of the term 'being a morning person' (or not)? Now, have you heard of the term 'being an afternoon/evening person'? I haven't, either! Generally, getting up in the morning can be a 'drag' - drag yourself out of bed, drag yourself to the bathroom or to the kitchen for a cup of coffee and then eventually drag yourself to work! There are many ways to motivate yourself but I'd like to mention only one simple method on how to motivate yourself in the mornings. The process involves two parts.

What is your attitude like when you get up?

Are you one of those people who 'don't do mornings'? Do you like to sleep until the sun shines on your belly, simply because you cannot stand to face the day?

Your attitude and your motivation levels have much more in common than you might think. When you are motivated, your attitude has simply changed towards the more positive. You think differently and this leads to you being motivated, or not if your attitude is 'off'.

What one needs to realise here is that if you wake up with the attitude of not wanting to look forward to the day, you've already started on the wrong foot. You need to change your attitude to that of being positive and looking forward to all the achievements and successes of the day.

So here is something that you can do - when you go to bed, think of all the possible opportunities and successes that you may (or will) have the following day. Think of something that you would really look forward to - if you are not looking forward to anything, then imagine not waking up at all!

After all, life itself should be your biggest opportunity to be you! I can guarantee that you will be able to think of something! The whole idea is to delve on these positive and motivational thoughts, so that when you wake up, you're automatically more inclined to think positively.

Use affirmations wherever possible!

So once you've woken up and had been delving on those positive thoughts for the next day, you should use positive affirmations to help you feel awesome and excited for the day that lies ahead.

One simple way to do this is to use the 'I FEEL FANTASTIC' affirmation repeatedly. As soon as you get out of bed and are 'coherent' (haha), repeat this phrase out loud 7 times, at least. Every time you say it, say it with more and more belief so that by the time you get to the seventh time, you actually believe yourself!

You might feel (and look) like a fool at first! This is normal - the first time I did this I looked over my shoulder to check who was looking at me with both eyebrows raised! This may be outside of your comfort zone so if you feel more comfortable, say it to yourself the first few times.

This method has an enormous effect and you'll be surprised at the results. Think of this as 'subliminal conditioning' - you're conditioning your attitude proactively! If you continue to do this for a few weeks, one day you'll wake up and already feel fantastic, without saying anything! And it's at that point that you have changed your attitude.

You can use theis method with almost any affirmation you can think of - create your own if you want! Instead of remembering all of them, you can write them on post-it notes and stick them all over! Here are some ideas:

  • "Today is going to be AWESOME!" posted on the fridge.
  • "I am and feel ALIVE!" posted on the microwave.
  • "I cant wait to go to work to be successful with ..." posted on your car's steering wheel.

The sky is your limit here - be creative. Actually there are no limits... whatever works for you. For instance, I ride a motorbike so the steering wheel wont work for me!

Summary:

Your morning motivation starts with your attitude. Start with a good attitude and your motivation is off to a good start. Motivating yourself thereafter will be much easier! Your attitude and motivation go hand-in-hand.

Use positive affirmations to repeat to yourself every morning. Doing this on a regular basis with self-belief will enable you to automatically be motivated as soon as you wake up. Just remember that Rome wasn't built in a day - the process takes time but be diligent with it and you'll soon start to notice the difference when you wake up in the mornings.

Sure, you might have an off day, but you'll be able to mentally recover from it a lot easier, simply because you'll have conditioned your attitude accordingly.

Motivate yourself every morning to start looking forward to your day!
