Is Criticism Inevitable And What Can You Do to Prevent It?

Criticism is not something that most people enjoy - it's not a preferred method for receiving feedback. One would usually want to hear the good news, knowing that whatever you do is awesome. Nobody likes to be criticized! Has somebody ever criticized you about something that you thought was the 'best idea since sliced bread'? Well, the chances are almost guaranteed that you have, at one point or another, been criticized about somethings. So is criticism inevitable and is there actually something that you can do to avoid it?

The boy, his grandfather and the donkey

You may have heard this story before but here it goes anyway. There once was a boy and his grandfather that traveled across the desert, with a donkey. When they started their journey, the boy decided that because he was young and fit, he would walk and let his grandfather ride on the donkey. So they traveled into the first town, where all the people looked at them and said "Why is the old man on the donkey? He should let the young boy ride on the donkey!".

So after passing through the town, the pair decided to change positions - the old man would walk and the young boy would ride on the donkey. They then came across another town, where the people again criticized them: "Why is the young boy on the donkey when he should let the old man ride?".

So once again, after passing through the town, they decided to change the positions - this time no-one would ride on the donkey. Both the young boy and grandfather walked alongside the donkey. The third town they then came across also found fault in this! "Why are both people walking when one of them could at least ride on the donkey?", they said.

The moral of the story is this: No matter what you do, you will never be able to avoid challenging other people's own beliefs. Someone, somewhere, somehow, will always find fault in what you do. I'm not saying that this will always happen - I'm merely suggesting that this will happen at some point. It might even be that you won't even know about it, but it will happen. You cannot make everyone happy!

Is Criticism Inevitable?

Absolutely not - you cannot avoid being criticized! Dr Myles Monroe said this about criticism:

“Criticism is the leader's greatest test of maturity, conviction and commitment to his vision.”

As a leader, you will be criticized at times and that is completely fine. If you have done your due diligence to determine that you are on the right track, then you can be certain that you are. Not everyone will agree with you!

What can you do to prevent criticism?

There is nothing that you can do to prevent criticism but then again, you may not always want to! Have you ever heard of constructive criticism? This is when you receive positive but critical feedback - it is the type of criticism that helps you grow and develop. Not all criticism is negative - we should welcome any criticism because at the end of the day, we will be accountable for our own actions.

Much like the story above - you will not be able to please everyone. You should do what you feel is right, within reason of course. There is no need to be foolish and think that the criticism due to you is uncalled for.

Just believe in yourself and stay committed to your vision and objectives!

Street Talk

I always appreciate a story within an article, and this one, especially, made all the options clear, except for the "believe in yourself" option. I prefer that option myself, but I cannot help but realize how we also criticize ourselves often by mentally hearing all of the other options that we have not chosen. So many decisions then are only half heartedly accepted. Good Heavens, that may explain why the Law of Attraction does not always turn out the way we wanted it to. Thanks for creating an article that gets the mind working.

Always a pleasure Lillian! I agree with you about the self-criticism and it is definitely something that we all tend to do. And yes, this also makes the Law of Attraction somewhat difficult, because criticism is usually negative, especially when it's about ourselves. These negative thoughts are what stops us from accepting the good things that are meant for us.

I don't know about you, but to me this is an interesting topic. The way I see it is that since it's more an issue of self-criticism, there should be at least one way to cut back on how we judge ourselves. So I'm going to monitor my self-judgment and make a note every time I find something to criticize myself about. Using the Benjamin Franklin technique. I'll make a column of negative things I tell myself. Then I'll go back and make another column (on the right side) of what I should be saying (the what I want instead.) What do you think? How would you go about creating awareness on this subject.
