The Motivation to Continue – How Life Perceived By Others

The elucidations of Psychiatry, how to perceive life.

Motivation to continue, to thrive in the face of adversity, to perceive the failures as life's lessons, and to overcome the demise of perceived success, the elucidations of Psychiatry. (what have I just written?)

More appropriately, how to survive swimming in the cesspool of life without swallowing or stepping in any of it. If the downfalls experienced, are lessons in life, do you receive a degree at the end of it? An MBA, a Ph. D, a BSc of life? No, you're judged and you judge yourself on how you overcame these trip ups, down slides and adversities.

So how to handle the problems becomes the lesson learnt by others. How did they handle that, or get over that, what did they do? The learning curve of those that follow you. But more importantly how do you handle these down slides yourself? By rising to the occasion by seeing then as what they are, lessons for those that follow, if you're perceived as down trodden and defeatist, this is how others might follow. If seen to “grab the bull by the horns” and charge to the next level of safety, it will become a motivational experience for those to follow.

Stress, a state of mental or emotional strain or suspense, a self-inflicted wound one to which you have no recourse but yourself. The ability to see the lighter side of life, the ups and not to see everything as a down swing, is the answer to stress control. The cliché of “rolling with the punches” comes to mind when I think of ways to deal with stress. Younger people need to learn that stress is controllable, by not think about the worst that can happen but rather what is the best that can happen. If the worst happens that is the time to deal with it, why spend time trying to repair something that has not broken.

I know this is so much easier to say than do, but with mental self-education a more positive outlook on life attainable. I commented on an article covering a similar exposition, an article talking of ones “grey area” your safe area, and if one should continue to strive for more, or to relax in the safety of comfort. I recommended that a more sink or swim attitude required, that one must continue forth and strive for that, which I wonder if we all know, we seek.

I think of Scott MacIntyre a blind singer on American Idols who also suffered from kidney failure, how he overcame the demise is not the intention here. The fact he went on to become the first blind singer to make it into the finals of the competition is. His laughing in the face of adversity, of his born with blindness and finally kidney failure, shows the strength of character with which he proceeds through life.

I would like to end by adding that a positive attitude can make so much more happen, negativity breeds an inclination towards failure. It also almost has you wish for failure, and when achieving success, a false level of excitement felt, that converts into a deeper disaster if things turn round.

I like yr slant here Rob. It seems that no matter what opinion we have about something, that colours our world positive or negative. How inspiring that contestant on Idol is and that despite his circumstances he must be a joy to be around. -have you studied Psychiatry by the way? :)?

C4rmen, never been near it. These articles come out of, God knows where, and sometimes I'm astounded about what I have written. It all comes from within and I suppose it must be a manifestation of something in the mind. (The idle mind wanders afar, or the old mans wandering mind.)

Rob, Sometimes the worst does happen... over and over! ... and yes, that then is the time to deal with it. Because what is the best that can happen is even what to focus on when the worst has happened... even over and over! Before "today's economy" it was often said that economists had correctly predicted 20 of the last 3 recessions:-) As in even professionals often focus on negative indicators. thanks - blessings, Cynthia

It is so Cynthia, but I maintain a positive outlook places one in a better position to handle the fall backs of life.

Thanks Rob I learned some good lessons in this article, like "not think about the worst that can happen but rather what is the best that can happen." and "...why spend time trying to repair something that has not broken." These are great pieces of advice.

Sometimes a good swift kick in the butt is what you need to propel you to greater heights. Hard when you're going through it, but keep that adrenalin going to get over the hump, and victory lies ahead! Much like sports challenges. Sports are like little surrogate life challenges. You're right Rob. Stay positive and philosophical.

So true Joan, It is easier said than done and as much as what I preach, there are times my wife has to remind me of my philosophy. Chin up, Chest out, there's a cake out there for you, and I'm back on track.

Rob, I've always been a glass half full guy. I agree that worrying about something that may or may not happen causes a lot of unnecessary stress. Deal with life as it happens and enjoy that part of it that you can.
