Recently I was linked to a video via facebook that was a car versus motorcycle drift battle on a closed drift course. My first thought was "drifting a sportbike on purpose?". Seriously, I have done it by mistake a time or two (and it was a butt puckerer I must admit) but what kind of adrenaline junkie does this on purpose......and what kind of motorcycle tire compounds are his tires made of?
Then I noticed it was "Apex" riding a Team Green ZX10r (well, florescent greenish/yellow anyway) and wearing my favorite safety gear company products so I was definitely checking this one out.
Well I found out...
...that I was extremely (pun intended) behind the times. Sportbike drifting has apparently become a major part of stunting sportbikes. Year I've seen it done in small stunt areas to wow a crowd and yeah, I've seen dirt bikers or flat trackers do it on loose dirt but A SPORTBIKE?...ON A DRIFT TRACK?...OR INNER CITY STREETS (part 2 and 3 of the battle)? Nah this was a first for me. Well except for seeing it in a few AMA races many years ago but I can't remember the one dudes name that used to mystify us all with this skill.
Now I'm hooked!!!
I mentioned before that I've drifted on my bike before by mistake and truth be told, like Nick "Apex" Brocha, I thought I was gonna die at the time (slick dewy road in the a.m. rushing to work) but immediately after I put my heart back in my chest I was like, "DAMN THAT WAS COOL!!!". Little did I know it would be a sport some years later.
I've been hittin YouTube...
... everyday lookin' for more tips and tricks to this. Now being a speed freak more than adrenaline junkie, I usually don't get into this type of stuff but the junkie in me is on the hunt for a beater that I can learn on. Something I can drop a few times and not be heartbroken and something easily fixable.
But I also gotta find out what tires these guys are using. Breaking a tire away can't be easy to do on the tires I'm used to riding on (all stick and no give). After all, sportbike tires are made to grab the asphalt not brush up next to it and tease it. Guess I better get to work finding the best motorcycle tire compounds for this endeavor so I can share it with the adrenaline junkies reading this. I'll catch yall on the track but until next time...
...LET YOUR SPEED FREAK LOOSE ON THE WORLD!!!
