Do Police Chase Motorcycles?

Let me start by saying that you should NEVER under any circumstances try to run away from the police (hopefully this is obvious) and that this article is meant to answer a question that I hear from people all the time.

I'm sure everyone has been curious at one point as to whether or not cops bother chasing motorcycles. I myself always wondered what the laws were regarding this and if all the different views, opinions, and stories I had heard over the years were accurate or not.

From what I have heard and researched many states have a "no pursuit" law that keeps police from pursuing those who try to run from minor traffic violations as a police chase can cause more harm than it is worth. Many policemen I have spoken with stated that they never even try to chase sport bikes if they are speeding off because they feel that those riders have a death wish when doing something like that.

Most policemen don't give chase to motorcyclists for several reasons. For one, they know that they likely will never catch up due to the high speed and maneuverability of a bike along with the fact that even if they could keep up, if the rider doesn't stop there is no way to force them without putting the rider in even more danger than is already occurring during the chase.

The only time that policemen will give chase to riders is if they have some type of advantage. If they have a helicopter to follow the rider then they will pursue and in some cases policemen are issued fast motorcycles for this very reason but this is rare.

One thing to remember though is that even if you think you can outrun the police, you can't outrun the fact that they might have gotten your license plate number. If this happens, it doesn't matter how fast you are going because you can bet that they will show up at your doorstep later with much more than a speeding ticket. Running from the police can leave you with hefty fines, jail time, felony charges, and your license being revoked. At that point you have to ask yourself, is it worth going fast to lose everything?

So after all that I had heard and read it turns out a lot of it was in fact true. Unless the policeman is feeling determined or has an advantage you can count on them leaving a speeding rider to their own foolish decisions. However, running from the police is never a good idea as it can not only get you into some serious trouble, but it can put yourself and those around you in danger. I can only urge all riders out there to take care and respect the bike!

Street Talk

They chase everyone here, and they usually catch them. I have seen bikes imbedded in police cruisers hoods from them pulling out in front of the bikes to stop them. They are brutal here. Not a pleasant sight for sure.

I would have thought a more appropriate title would read "Do police ever catch them"
