Engine Ice

This article will introduce you to the Engine Ice motorcycle coolant product. The article will explain the benefits of using the product and why you should buy it.

What is Engine Ice?

Engine Ice is an antifreeze or automotive coolant. It's dark blue in color. It is sold in a half gallon size in a clear plastic bottle. It's made by the Cycle Logic Company. It is very popular with the sportbike and sport touring crowd. The product flat out works for almost all of us. If your sportbike runs hot in the summertime when you are riding in stop and go heavy traffic, pour in some "Ice." It dropped my engine temps by 7 to 9 degrees which is significant in the Florida summer heat. It works great for the Kawi ZX14 which really runs hot in heavy traffic.

OK, don't just pour it in. You must actually change out your factory antifreeze coolant with straight Engine Ice. Do not mix engine ice with water, OK? Be smart and find out the correct procedure for changing out the coolant in your bike. Read the service manual. Watch some how to videos on you tube. You can do this yourself. Or you can have your mechanic do it. Do you trust your local dealership? You may find many sportbike owners do not trust the stealership. You decide.

Will this work in my bike?

Yes it will. Most modern sport motorcycle radiators are made of aluminum. Engine Ice is completely safe to use in a motorcycle application. I guess it's used in some cars and trucks too. The stuff isn't cheap, though.. It might cost quite a bit to install this in your Ford big block power stroke diesel pick-up, OK?

Is it hard to install Engine Ice?

Like I said, read your service manual. It took me about 3 hours for my first coolant flush, reflush and refill with engine ice. There maybe a couple three drain bolts you have to remove with your particular bike. Take your time. Do it right the first time. How's your radiator cap? are your hoses OK? When it's all done check for leaks. Fluid leaks can be very dangerous on a motorcycle. A few drops of slippery coolant could reach your rear tire and you could crash hard! Always do a walk around before every ride and look for puddles or oil runs on your plastics.

Why have I never heard of this stuff?

Not many people own a sportbike. Not all sportbike owners do their own maintenance. And very few motorcycle owners ever change out thiei antifreeze. The "water Wetter" product has been used by motorcycle road racers and drag racers for quite awhile. You've probably seen the water wetter pink stuff at the parts store before. Water wetter doesn't cost very much. it's legal at most race tracks. Engine Ice is a relatively new product for the bike enthusiast. It's been around for what, maybe 1o years?

Where can i Buy Engine Ice?

You can buy it at your local Cycle Gear retail store. You maybe able to find it at your motorcycle dealership. Maybe not. Better call first unless you're riding over there anyway. The best place is to buy it online. You probably have some favorite vendors you use. Many of these guys will carry the product. Just google "engine Ice". You might try amazon. I've found bike chemicals at very good prices on amazon.

Will this void my Warranty?

I'd say there is a 99.99% chance the use of engine ice will NOT void your warranty. It's more about proper cooling system maintenance. Did you get all the air out of the system when you flushed and refilled the system? Remember, take your time and do it right the first time. If you have questions, then ask dammit.

Can I use it at the Track?

Well, that's a grey area. Every road racing track has different rules. It's best to call ahead and ask track management. Some will say no. If this is the case, drain out your engine ice and fill the system with Distilled water. Don't use plain tap water. It has all kinds of minerals and crap in in it.

When you get back from the track, reinstall the engine ice. You probably bought 2 bottles for your initial purchase. You will have plenty left over in the 2nd bottle if you even opened the 2nd bottle for the initial install. Well, this is what I do. It works for me.

How much does it Cost?

I just looked up the price on amazon. A 64 Oz. bottle is currently priced at $19.99. I looked at some of the other online vendors. Prices run from 22 to 25 bucks a bottle. Amazon is cheaper. I told you so. Go ahead and buy 2 bottles. I know it's expensive. This way you only have to pay shipping once. You might need that extra bottle to top off your system.. One bottle may work for a supersport sized sportbike, though.

Conclusion:

This is one of the motorcycle chemicals that actually works. I don't know any rider who has been sorry to have installed engine ice. Go ahead and google some reviews. The only negative you may come across is the price. It's not cheap. Our sportbike toys deserve only the best, don't they? Well, mine do.

Street Talk

Thanks for the comment Shawn. it's a specialty product. I've been concentrating on getting the 30in 30 done. I'm going to go back to the WA training in a couple days. I'll still write at least something every day.
