How to Get Better Gas Mileage on A Motorcycle

Many people know (and are often times quite envious) of the fact that motorcycles get great gas mileage. Thanks to a smaller frame, less weight, and a more efficient engine a motorcycle typically averages in the 35-40mpg range. Some bikes can take this even further with mpg ranging all the way up to 75mpg and more!

With such great gas mileage from the start why would anyone worry about trying to make it even better? Well, with even just a slight increase a motorcycle can take a big advantage. Think about it, if you were able to squeeze out just one or two more miles from your overall mpg that could be the difference between getting to your destination by bike or by walking. Plus, for every extra mile you get that's more money you save on gas which is obviously very important right now.

So to improve your gas mileage surely you must tinker with the engine replace complex parts right? Not at all. By following a few simple tricks and methods you can easily improve gas mileage on your motorcycle.

Driving Habits

The first thing to change is how you drive your motorcycle. The more aggressive you drive the more gas you burn. So cut out the unnecessary throttle at the stoplights and the harsh braking. Where you choose to drive is important as well. If possible, stay on long stretches of open road rather than city driving (besides, riding a motorcycle in traffic isn't fun anyway).

Take Care of the Bike

By maintaining simple aspects of your motorcycle you can not only keep it in top shape but save on gas as well. Always keep the tires inflated to proper levels to ensure the best mileage as well as by keeping your engine clean. The same goes with the actual fuel you put in. Be sure to use high quality fuel to keep everything running smoothly.

Lighten the Load

Make yourself and the bike as light as possible whenever riding. Full face helmets have less wind drag which work to your advantage; taking off any unnecessary extras (saddles, bike flair, etc.) will also reduce weight and save on gas.

There are plenty of other ways to save on gas when riding but the ways listed above are some of the easiest and most consistent ways to improve your mileage. Simple measures such as keeping the engine clean and using fuel will have long term savings which will more than make up for the extra time/money spent on engine care and so forth.

As a bonus, if you really want to get maximum gas mileage you may consider riding a low displacement scooter or electric bike. These bikes can sometimes get up to 100mpg! Now that's great gas mileage but may not be so helpful to those who are looking for more power.

With gas prices this high if you ride a motorcycle you can't afford NOT to take advantage of these tips.
