How to Survive A Motorcycle Accident

While the title may sound a little morbid, knowing how to "properly" wreck your motorcycle can be the difference between life and death. Obviously there are going to be dangerous situations that the rider has no control of, but many times there are several things riders can do to help increase their chances in the event of a motorcycle accident.

Aside from the obvious prevention methods like wearing a helmet and the proper gear, there are plenty of other important things to remember before, during, and after a motorcycle accident.

Before

Hopefully at this point you are wearing the proper gear including helmet, gloves, and any other necessities. With that in check, it is important to note that you significantly increase your chances for any accident whenever dangerous maneuvers are performed such as wheelies or taking corners at extremely high speeds. Barring those, there are other things you should take note of while riding to keep you from wrecking your bike.

  1. Always watch for hazards such as road kill or oil spills.
  2. Always assume that you can't be seen and stay out of blind spots.
  3. When following cars, try to stay aligned with their outer tires that way in the event of them moving over to avoid an animal, you have a better chance of avoiding it as well.
  4. Always brake BEFORE a turn and never while in one. When hitting turns, no matter how sharp they are, be sure to only coast or accelerate through them to maintain balance.

These are just some of the basics but can really make a difference while riding.

During

No one likes to think about this part but it is an unfortunate truth that motorcyclist are more at risk of getting into an accident. However, with the right mindset and knowledge, these accidents can possibly turn out much better than anticipated. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you are coming up on something too fast (a truck that just pulled out in front of you, etc.) and you can't stop, do your best to slow the bike down as much as possible and prepare to lay it down. When laying a bike down it is important to get it away from you and to do your best to lay yourself down outside of traffic or other harms way. While many disagree about laying a bike down, it has been known to save many people's lives by keeping them from otherwise smashing into another vehicle.

In the event that you have been hit or have lost control of your bike and are sent going down it is crucial to remain relaxed and in the best control of the situation as possible. While this may sound crazy (stay relaxed during a crash?) it can be the difference between serious injury or walking away. If you find yourself crashing do your best to get away from the bike (let go, push off, etc.) and then keep your body relaxed and go with the direction you are headed. If you try to fight the fall or keep your body stiff you are more likely to break bones and cause more damage to yourself. This technique is the same one employed by professional stuntmen and it is how they keep themselves from getting seriously injured.

After

During an event like this you likely won't realize what is going on so it is very important to remain still and not try to stand up or move after the crash. Many people make the mistake of moving thinking they aren't hurt and end up harming themselves further. Wait for help if nearby, call an ambulance, or do anything possible to avoid movement or effort until you can be sure you are in a proper position to do so. Seek medical advice even if you think it wasn't that bad, you would be surprised at how many get whiplash but don't realize it until it's too late.

I am not saying that any of the above methods are 100% foolproof and will guarantee your safety during a motorcycle accident, but by wearing the proper gear, riding smart, and keeping a level head while on the road, you can significantly increase your chances for a safer, healthier ride.

Street Talk

Yes your advice is very good, I had a motorcycle accident 20 years ago (old Kawasaki 750 3 cylinder, fast but too light). The bike went into a bad wobble (these 750's were known for this) after I ran over an overpass expansion joint. I had to lay the bike down and did have a helmet on. I only had some bad road rash on my knees and hands/arms from trying to roll away from the bike, but also popped my right ankle out and broke the fibula do it because my foot was caught under the bike seat. It even had a crash bar on it, but I my foot got caught on the seat near the fuel tank.

Agree with you totally, Shannon. Great article. If you don't lay down your bike, you end up becoming a head-first missile. You packed a lot of great info in there.

man, this is a really good article Shannon. I am so glad you covered the after part. People do not know they may feel no pain when they are in shock. It is so easy to compound any injury.

Liked the article reminds me of the advanced driving course I took, the very important of staying alert in an accident and following certain proceedures that should become second nature.

Thanks, it is important for everyone out there to be educated. While it isn't the most "fun" thing to do, taking a riding course can really pay off.

We used to ride motorcycles in our thirties..we had about the best times of our youth. We rode about three years and never dumped, but on every ride at least one rider would loose it. Most of the time from over riding. I liked what you had to say. Sharon Vacelli

Thank you, I too have never seriously dumped my bike but a few small lay overs due to oil and what not. Good point about someone almost also losing it though, it happens more frequently when you overdo it.

Good info Shannon....had to lay mine down one time...wasn't a pleasant experience and no serious injuries...a heavy jacket and helmet made the difference....Actually go up afterwards and rode the bike home..

Thank you, I'm glad you weren't hurt! That's right, can you imagine what it would have been like with no helmet a jacket?
